A man named Francis relates a story about his best friend Alan and his fiancée Jane. The prophecy comes to pass, as Alan is murdered, and Cesare is a prime suspect. Cesare creeps into Jane's bedroom and abducts her, running from the townspeople and finally dying of exhaustion. Meanwhile, the police discover a dummy in Cesare's cabinet, while Caligari flees. Francis tracks Caligari to a mental asylum. He is the director! Or is he? Lumped in with, but certainly operating in a whole other realm than late 1970s new wave, Pere Ubu from Cleveland created several noisy masterpieces of modern rock and roll, subtle electronics and sound effects with the semi-melodic howling of David Thomas exploiting minutiae and his pain. The Modern Dance, their first, is my favourite Ubu album, in fact in my all-time top ten (#5) but, oddly, none of the three songs used here in the Tunedex is from The Modern Dance. The appeal of the band to me was hearing their exploration of textures and symbols mutate into patterns and concepts. Though the cracked vocals of Thomas are an acquired taste to be sure, the band is always doing something interesting behind him. Atmospheric and challenging, the tunes evoke rusty landscapes and desperate lives overridden by attempted joyousness, and all the time bubbling just under the surface, the fun of the experiment. We tried to find visual accompaniments worthy of Ubu's noise. The vision of Pere Ubu carried the message that the small things, the everyday things need our attention, our mindfulness, as does our inner life. Around the same time, David Lynch was showing us similar places. It's not always pretty in there but, at least, LOOK! The rawness of this music added to its authenticity in the dying disco era, the electronics and the strange vocables attracted me. Caligari's Mirror is from their 1978 album <b>...</b>
