Carcassonne is another great family board game. In fact, Carcassonne is frequently considered a gateway game - a game that's great to introduce people to more designer or "euro" board games. And we'll have to admit that the unique play mechanics of Carcassonne was such a new experience for our family that it helped introduce us to many other excellent board games that we've added to our collection. Carcassonne is on our top 10 family game list.
This video is intended to teach the table top game Carcassonne to someone brand new to the game. Both parts combined total about 27 minutes of video. It doesn't really take that long to teach someone the game! It is the nature of video instruction to include repetition, answer imagined questions, and try to look at various contingencies. The game is very simple, and new players pick it up (and enjoy it) very quickly. This is not a review of the game, nor is it a strategy guide. It is meant to be a video version of the printed instructions. I only cover the original/base/vanilla set here. 5 players sat down for a mega-game of Carcassonne. 200+ tiles, 3 different sets combined. Plus the essentials: beer, cotton candy, wine, mini-quiches, chips, and cheese sticks. The initial castle ("The City") was supposed to serve as the inner city, but we didn't have enough room and after fighting a bit decided it wasn't worth the trouble. We did retain the score from that game, however and carried it over. The game went from 6pm to 3am in the morning. There were no tears, surprisingly, and I think that Chris won in the end although I was too exhausted to care. The face up front is not mine -- I was the guy in the back with the conspicuous ashtray. The song is the ending credits song from Portal, which is a brilliant game. Thanks to Chris for putting the vid together.
