The Carpenters - Yesterday Once More (INCLUDES LYRICS)

Montage of images along with the classic song "Yesterday Once More" from The Carpenters RIP Karen Carpenter Lyrics: When I was young I'd listen to the radio Waitin' for my favorite songs Waiting they played I'd sing along It made me smile Those were such happy times And not so long ago How I wondered where they'd gone But they're back again Just like a long lost friend All the songs I loved so well (*) every sha-la-la-la Every wo-wo-wo Still shines Every shing-a-ling-a-ling That they're starting to sing's So fine When they get to the part Where he's breakin' her heart It can really make me cry Just like before It's yesterday once more Lookin' back on how it was In years gone by And the good times that I had Makes today seem rather sad So much has changed It was songs of love that I would sing to then And I'd memorize each word Those old melodies Still sound so good to me As they melt the years away Repeat (*) All my best memories Come back clearly to me Some can even make me cry Just like before It's yesterday once more (*) Repeat

Merry Christmas, Darling - The Carpenters

Karen's sweet voice singing the sweetest Christmas song. Richard Carpenter composed the music for this song in 1966 when he was 19 years old. Frank Pooler wrote the lyrics twenty years earlier, in 1946, when he also was only 19 years old. The song Pooler had written was to be a Christmas gift for his girl friend whom he was missing while being away from her during a visit with his parents at Christmas time. Sadly, their relationship ended before he could present it to her. Twenty years later, Pooler was the choir director at California State University in Long Beach, when both Karen and Richard Carpenter were part of the choir. Richard and Karen were playing local gigs and had tired of playing the usual Christmas fare. Richard asked Pooler, their favorite professor, if he had any ideas for different songs. Pooler remembered the Christmas song he had written many years before and mentioned it to Richard, adding that he didn't think much of the melody anymore. Richard said he would try his hand at writing new music for the lyrics. Within about 15 minutes he was finished creating a song, that was written by two teenagers who were a generation apart, that was destined to become a Christmas classic. The song was first released as a single (yes, a 45) on November 20,1970, and earned gold record status. This song sparked the idea of a Christmas album by The Carpenters, and on October 13, 1978, "Christmas Portrait" was released with this newly recorded version of the song. Karen ...

Richard Carpenter: From Joe's Studio, circa 1967. This is the one tape, 4-track or otherwise, that survives as, for somne reason, Joe gave it to me.....Karen, at 17, is a marvel. Agreed, Richard. This song also features Karen's talent for drumming. You can read more about this and other Carpenters songs in the CD sleeve of Carpenters GOLD.
Karen Carpenter - The Drummer

This is a video showcasing Karen Carpenter's undeniable talents as a drummer. For those who aren't aware of Karen's involvement with the drums, let it be known that they were her first passion and came before she began her career as a singer. Karen's drumming can be heard on many tracks on several Carpenters albums. What's also most notable about Karen is that she sang and drummed simultaneously... her singing never hindered her drumming, and vice versa... she never ever hit a sour note or missed a beat. An extremely small amount of people can profess to having such a talent. "She was a 5'4 tornado, pair of drumsticks in her hand". Carpenters - The Rainbow Connection

Recorded in 1981 for the "Made In America" album, this performance is a work lead by Karen. The song was recorded with just piano, bass and drums, and vocals by Karen to introduce the song for the other musicians and to familiarize them with Richard's arrangement. Had the song been completed and included on the album, other instruments would have been added such as strings and horns, and later, Karen would have come back to the studio and recorded a new vocal track. Karen recorded the song at Richard's request, but simply didn't like the song, and so the song was never completed.. Years later, after Karen's death, fans learned of the track and begged Richard to release it. In an interview, Richard stated, "If I ever released it, Karen would come down and get me!" But twenty years after Karen recorded "Rainbow Connection," Richard began work on the last Carpenters album, a Japanese CD entitled "As Time Goes By" released in 2001, and he decided to complete the song and include it on the CD. To put this song into historical context, it was recorded a year after Karen completed her solo album, an album which she decided to shelve at the urging of A&M. She then returned to the studio to begin recording what turned out to be her last Carpenters album, "Made In America." Her solo album has been described as her effort to change her image by breaking away from traditional Carpenters songs and recording songs with more risque lyrics in a higher tone of voice. WELETE SUK, ETHIOPIA - UNDATED: Carpenter Sintayehu Tishale, 42, hammers in a nail using his feet in his workshop in Welete Suk, on the edge of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A man who lost the use of his arms after being born with debilitating polio has defied expectations by becoming a carpenter. Sintayehu Tishale, 42, uses his feet to saw, chap, hammer and lathe wood into furniture, which he then sells in his workshop. Despite his limited mobility, the skilled craftsman wields a hammer with incredible accuracy and can operate dangerous machinery with his dexterous feet. The married father-of-five, who uses a specially adapted bicycle chair to get around, is famous in his hometown of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for his great talent. He said to develop his amazing skills he had to train his legs to become stronger and more flexible. Sintayehu said: "When I was very young I used to like to work in a garden using my legs as hands. Later I began to fix small things like stools and practiced sharpening knives with my feet. I made sure to practice as much as I could because I knew I had to make me feet work like hands." music by incompetech.com

Carpenters - We've Only Just Begun (1970)

"We've Only Just Begun" is The Carpenters' signature song. Although it was recorded in early 1970, it is still much in demand as a wedding anthem.Written by the songwriting team of Roger Nichols (music) and Paul Williams (lyrics), the song originally debuted in a commercial for Crocker National Bank in California in 1970, with Williams providing the vocals. Williams has said they left out a direct reference to the bank in part to make it salable as a pop song, and also because they couldn't conceive a reasonable rhyme for "Crocker." It is ranked #405 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of "the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". The song was originally recorded by Smokey Roberds, a friend of Nichols, under the name Freddie Allen (his Christian names). Although fairly successful in California, it made no impact nationally, which Roberds attributed to promotion and distribution problems. Believing that the song had hit potential, Richard Carpenter selected the composition for the duo's third single and included it on the LP Close to You. Released in the late summer of 1970, the single featured his sister Karen's lead vocals and the overdubbed harmonies of both siblings. Following their hit "(They Long To Be) Close to You" onto the charts, "We've Only Just Begun" crested at #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the pair's second gold single and was considered by both Karen and Richard to be their signature song. No explanation needed here for the true game show fans out there...this is John's complete run to the $1000000 prize. I finally managed to catch this, as this aired in a marathon of different game shows that was shown before the premiere of the game show tournament Grand Slam on GSN. I taped Grand Slam tonight and will upload the first two opening rounds of that after I'm through getting this run up. By the way, John Carpenter will meet Tic Tac Dough legend Thom McKee in the first round of the 16-player Grand Slam tournament.
