Caterpillar Bulldozer - Israel/Palestine

Caterpillar bulldozers have come to symbolise foreign involvement in Israel's occupation. But should the company be held liable if their products are used to break international law? Bulldozers are the iron fist of the Israeli army, used to destroy Palestinian homes, uproot orchards and build illegal settlements. But it was the death of Rachel Corrie that brought to international attention a campaign to hold the company to account. Now a law suit has been launched accusing Caterpillar of human rights violations. (Inigo Gilmore)

Moonpools and Caterpillars: Sundays

Moonpools and Caterpillars: Hear from the album, "Lucky Dumpling" (1995) Nationality: USA How long have you struggled here? How long have we tried? Don't turn your back on me, I'm dying inside. Is there a yearning inside, That keeps the spirit breaking. Is there a yearning inside? That reminds us we'll succeed? I've lost once before, I'm older now. Sometimes i cannot remember, But sometimes cannot forget. I've lost once before, I'm older now! But sometimes i forget my age! Is there a yearning inside, That keeps the spirit breaking. Is there a yearning inside? That reminds us we'll succeed? Sundays, Sundays! How long have you struggled here? How long have we tried? Don't turn your back on me, I'm dying inside. Is there a yearning inside, That keeps the spirit breaking. Is there a yearning inside? That reminds us we'll succeed? (repeat till end...)

Painted Lady Butterflies Develop, Emerge in Time Lapse

Here we see the later life stages of several Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)Butterflies. Once the caterpillars are mature, they suspend themselves upside-down, by attaching a body part called the "cremaster" to a silken pad on the twig, much like the way Velcro works. In about 1 day, the caterpillar sheds its final skin to complete the pupation process. Inside the pupa, the caterpillar has essentially liquified itself into a soup of cells. During the next 12-14 days, metamorphosis takes place - the cells are "re-arranged" and transformed into the adult insect. For most of this process, there is no visible change on the outside, but as the final few days approach, the developing adult butterfly can be seen through the semi-transparent pupal case. The butterfly's wing colors and pattern can be seen to darken. Finally, the fully developed adult separates from the pupal shell about an hour before it emerges, a process called "eclosion". Once the adult emerges, it takes only a few minutes to expand its wings by pumping a body fluid into the wings' vein structure. After a couple of hours, the fluid dries and hardens, leaving the wings rigid enough propel it in flight. The soundtrack is "Painted Ladies Theme" from the StarSpin EP/CD by Technician (yours truly),MP3 downloads and CDs available at the Technician website: technician.jcmdi.com Enjoy the show! Monarch Caterpillar

The Monarch Caterpillars are beautiful creatures. We often speak of the famous butterfly they become, but rarely take the time to admire the brightly colored caterpillar. They have simply "amazing" colors and can often be seen working there way around Milkweed plants. They are about 2-3/4 inches in length. They are toxic so birds will not eat them. I'm Mark Fraser you can find me at www.naturewalkswithmark.org Did you know? Monarch Caterpillars are only toxic because of the Milkweed foliage they eat? One species of Butterfly called the "Viceroy" Mimics the monarch! Monarch caterpillars are only one of "many" species of insect that feed solely on the Milkweed for survival!

Sinister Virus Zombifies, Liquefies Gypsy Moth Caterpillars

A nefarious baculovirus, that only targets the gypsy moth caterpillar, infects it's host and forces it to climb to the very top of a tree, before liquefying it and showering deadly, disease-ridden goo down onto the other caterpillars below. Horror horror horror. It's now been discovered that just a single gene found in the virus causes this entire process, giving birth to hundreds of nightmarish scenarios involving mutated versions of the common cold. We're basically one gene away from a flu that makes us walk into The Gap, and explode into a deadly puddle of ichor. Sweet dreams tonight, kids!

Roly-Poly role models for future robots Sometimes it pays to be spineless. Take the caterpillar--it can squirm and crawl in ways that would make a contortionist green with envy. One such animal, a green tobacco hornworm, dangles off Barry Trimmer's finger, half of its body squirming and bending in mid-air. What fascinates Trimmer, a Tufts University biology professor, is how caterpillars can move in ways animals with spines and skeletons can't. For this and more Science Nation, go to www.nsf.gov

Forest Tent Caterpillar. Malacosoma Disstria.

A spring trip to Addington Highlands, Ontario. May 8, 2010. The Forest Tent Caterpillar Moth (Malacosoma disstria) is the larva of a North American moth, found throughout the United States and Canada, and most common in the eastern regions. These tent caterpillars do not make tents, rather they weave a silky sheet where they lie together during molting. They lay down strands of silk as they move over branches and travel along them like tightrope walkers. However, it has been shown that a trail pheromone secreted from the ventral surface of the posterior tip of the abdomen rather than the silk guides and stimulates trail following. The caterpillar are social and travel and feed en masse. The caterpillars live in deciduous trees, which they strip of leaves after emerging from their eggs. The moths favor oak, sweetgum and tupelo, aspen trees, and sugar maple for oviposition but the larvae can be found feeding on many other species of woody trees or shrubs when they disperse from ovipositional trees during outbreaks. The females lay eggs in masses of up to 300, which are stuck to twigs and covered with a gluey cement called spumaline which prevents them from desiccating or freezing over the winter. The eggs hatch the following winter. Malacosoma disstria The caterpillars are considered problem is when their populations explode in the fall. They can completely consume a tree. The trees re-foliate quite quickly (within two weeks to a month) and produce enough new leaves to ...
