The Cavalryman
Video I made to honor the service of my great great grandfather in the Confederate Army during the War Between the States. He was Pvt Fletcher Cheatham, CSA, of Giles County, TN, who joined the 6th Tennessee Confederate Cavalry in 1862, saw his first action at the Battle of Shiloh, & saw action in all of the major battles in the West. His regiment was decimated at the Battle of Chicamauga, and the 6th was then combined with the 1st Tennessee Confederate Cavalry, commanded by Gen Nathan B Forest. At the Battle of Atlanta, it was Forrest's Cavalry that was chasing Sherman on his march to Savannah. At Savannah, Fletcher was reassigned to action in North Carolina to protect Lee's southern flank. It was here that Fletcher was forced to lay down arms, when Lee surrendered at Appomattox, April, 1865. Fletcher's son, Lindzy also grew up to be a cavalryman, just like his father. Lindzy joined the US 7th Cavalry in 1892, and was stationed at Ft Grant in the Arizona Territories, one of the toughest places left in the old west. He participated in the last of the Indian Wars on the frontier. In 1897, Lindzy re-enlisted, was sent to the Philippines in 1898, in the Spanish American War, where he won the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions at the Battle of Manila. He was promoted to 2nd Lt, then received a presidential appointment to the newly formed Philippine Scouts, where he played an active & decisive role in putting down the Islamic Moro Insurrection.
