Protein synthesis: an epic on the cellular level

Directed in 1971 by Robert Alan Weiss for the Department of Chemistry of Stanford University and imprinted with the "free love" aura of the period, this short film continues to be shown in biology class today. It has since spawn a series of similar funny attempts at vulgarizing protein synthesis. Narrated by Paul Berg, 1980 Nobel prize for Chemistry.

The Cellular Song

Lyrics, Vocals and Animation by Uno de los Reyes To the tune of "Hoedown" from "Whose Line is it Anyway" PROKARYOTE (singing) I am a prokaryote, a simple little cell I don't have much inside me, it does me very well A cell membrane, some ribosomes, and scattered DNA Just the bare necessities, and I do okay. (Well, sometimes I have a flagellum, but otherwise I'm quite simple. Really! My DNA is in a section called the nucleoid. My body parts all float around in a liquid called the cytoplasm, but besides that I'm quite simple. Really! Oh, wait, did I say that already? Uh, let me check my script. Hmm. Oh, yes, yes. It's that important. Just remember that I'm really simple. But despite this, I am capable of withstanding extreme conditions, which is quite an advantage to me as compared to my cousin, the eukaryote. Speaking of whom, here he comes! Hi cousin!) EUKARYOTE (Hiya!) (singing) I am the eukaryote, the much more knotty one I've got all my organelles, which makes me quite fun They have many functions, but the list is really long, Oh well, to find out, you'll have to wait for the next song! PROKARYOTE Oy.

She Farted And Created The World

Soundtrack: cribble.net Like Cribble on Facebook: fb.com She Farted And Created The World is an animation about a dog who farts and creates a world... and follow a sort-of evolution cycle within it. The whole thing is made entirely from recycled papers. Bank statements, bills, scraps found on the street, pointless spam mail, paper the graphic kids throw out (they waste so much paper)... whatever I could get my mitts on! I dedicate this animation to the worlds greatest dog, Maggie, who lost her lady bits last summer. Hope this'll cheer her up. Healing Quest: Antioxidants for Cellular Health

The trillions of cells in our bodies produce the energy that keeps us alive. As they process food and oxygen to create energy, they also release dangerous molecules called free radicals or oxidants. These oxidants can do a lot of damage. What happens inside our bodies is similar to what happens to an apple when it is cut open and exposed to oxygen: it turns brown because oxygen is corrosive. Our bodies have a defense mechanism in the form of antioxidant enzymes, which neutralize free radicals. This defense mechanism works well until our 20's, but as we get older our cells produce more free radicals than our defenses can neutralize. Oxidative stress caused by free radicals has been linked to over 200 illnesses, so this is a major medical concern. Some experts predict that people will soon monitor their oxidative stress as routinely as they are now monitor cholesterol. Scientists have been researching ways to boost our natural antioxidant enzymes. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables helps, but many experts say it's not enough. This segment discusses a nutritional supplement called Protandim, which has been shown to be very effective in maintaining cellular health. Protandim contains 5 herbs that have been used in ayurvedic medicine for centuries. After 3 months of taking this supplement, a 78 year old man was tested and his cellular health was shown to be similar to that of a 20 year old.

The Magic School Bus Goes Cellular (1/3)

Episode 45 on Cells Arnold is about to have the honor of being the first kid to receive one of the Rocky Awards at the annual Granite Awards. However, he has an embarrassing predicament. For reasons that are never exactly explained, Arnold has eaten only Seaweedies for a month and has consequently turned orange. ("It's my favorite color; except when it's my own skin.") He then asks, "What's the difference between my skin and say, Phoebe's?" So, of course, the class goes on a field trip to compare their skin, but they get nowhere since none of Phoebe's cells are orange. The class has to learn about cells and how they get energy to solve the mystery before Arnold is forced to accept the award. It turns out the Seaweedies are high in carotene and Arnold's exclusively eating of them has pigmented his skin.

Bite-Sized Biochemistry #19: Cellular Signaling II

Lecture by Kevin Ahern of Oregon State University discussing Biochemistry Basics in BB 450. For details, see ecampus.oregonstate.edu Download Metabolic Melodies at www.davincipress.com Related courses include BB 350 - oregonstate.edu BB 451 - oregonstate.edu BB 100 - oregonstate.edu Cellular Signaling II Highlights 1. Other receptors involved in signal transduction (signaling) act in different ways. For example, some receptors stimulate the activity of the enzyme Phospholipase C. This enzyme acts on a membranous molecule called phosphatidyl inositol (or PIP2). Cleavage of PIP2 by phospholipase C results in production of TWO second messengers. One of these, diacylglycerol (DAG) remains near or in the lipid bilayer where it stimulates another kinase, Protein Kinase C. Protein Kinase C acts to phosphorylate numerous proteins/enyzmes to activate/inactivate them, depending upon the enzyme. The other second messenger produced by phospholipase C cleavage is inositol 1,4,5 triphosphate (also called IP3). IP3 is soluble in the cytoplasm and it acts there to stimulate the release of calcium from intracellular storage areas holding calcium. 2. Calcium may be thought of as a kind of 'third' messenger in the process of signaling. Cells normally must keep the concentration of the ion low so as to prevent it from binding to proteins and precipitating DNA. Calcium is ...
