The Celtics led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter, but Toronto's first exhibition game was still considered a success by new head coach Dwane Casey. "I liked our effort, I liked our toughness," Casey said. "We needed a couple more at the end. Overall I was pleased with the effort." The emphasis has been on defence as the team prepared for a season shortened by a long labour dispute, but offence remains a work in progress. The Raptors missed some open shots and hit slightly better than 38 per cent from the floor. Toronto also committed 21 turnovers that led to 26 points. "I thought our defence was fantastic," Casey said. "We have what we call multiple stops and we did a lot of those. We try to get seven per game and we reached our goal with that. The 1985-86 Boston Celtics... One of the greatest teams in history. They had a tall, skilled and strong frontcourt, maybe the best ever. The Big 3 with Larry "Legend" Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert "The Chief" Parish. They boasted outside shooting, postgame, rebounding, defense, passing ability, power, smartness, agility, basically just everything you can get and more. They also had an amazing backcourt with Dennis "DJ" Johnson and Danny Ainge. DJ, a defensive stopper and former explosive shooting guard, here a more steady point guard coming through with scoring, passing, great decisions, clutch plays and, of course, defense. Ainge was a sharpshooting guard who could also handle and pass the ball, and played good scrappy defense. With a great bench led by Sixth Man of the Year Bill Walton, a former MVP that saw his already admirable and promising career cut short by injuries. Walton managed to stay healthy for the season and registered big numbers playing less than twenty minutes per game. The big man was a great addition to an already unbelievable frontcourt, providing defense, rebounding, passing, intelligence, also offense, leadership, clutchness, energy and power. Also on the bench were two good parts of this team: forward Scott Wedman and guard Jerry Sichting. Wedman, a strong player, former All-Star and All-Defensive Second Team selection in his last years, was still playing good, helping the team in many ways, scoring big and defending.
