Lionel Hampton - Centennial Celebration
The Concord Music Group, home to one of the largest jazz catalogs in the world, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lionel Hampton as part of the labels ongoing Centennial Celebration series with the release of "Lionel Hampton - Centennial Celebration." Featured here are recordings with Art Tatum and Buddy Rich, Harry Sweets Edison, and the Golden Men of Jazz. Lionel Hampton was the first jazz vibraphonist and was one of the jazz giants beginning in the mid-'30s. He has achieved the difficult feat of being musically open-minded (even recording "Giant Steps") without changing his basic swing style. Hamp started out as a drummer, playing with the Chicago Defender Newsboys' Band as a youth. His original idol was Jimmy Bertrand, a '20s drummer who occasionally played xylophone. Hampton played on the West Coast with such groups as Curtis Mosby's Blue Blowers, Reb Spikes, and Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders (with whom he made his recording debut in 1929) before joining Les Hite's band, which for a period accompanied Louis Armstrong. At a recording session in 1930, a vibraphone happened to be in the studio, and Armstrong asked Hampton (who had practiced on one previously) if he could play a little bit behind him and on "Memories of You" and "Shine"; Hamp became the first jazz improviser to record on vibes.

Why hilariously? Isn't it obvious? I mean, take a look at how much attention UN Owen gets, I highly believe it's the Touhou theme with most arranges in the world, but then we take a look at Flandre's stage theme and... you find one arrange in a million. M8 deserves a place in this compilation, for those who don't know who he is, he's the pianist in that insane Shinki arrange (number 68) and that one in a million Waltz of Misery arrange. You know, it's a pity this guy doesn't do more of this kind of stuff, since he's an excellent pianist and arranger (good keyboardist too). If you lurk around their website and listen to some of their crossfades and sample songs you'll see that they don't focus on classical music only, they tend to do some other stuff (especially M8's friend, SS, who does mostly synth metal), that I don't quite find that awesome. Actually I wanted to put up ARA's epic arrange, choruses included and all... but that's too epic for a piano <b>...</b>

National Cherry Blossom Festival 2012 "Centennial Celebration"
The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC is one of the most spectacular events of the year. Though the trees are only in bloom for a very short time, the festival draws in millions of tourists from all over the country to see the Tidal Basin surrounded in pink and white flowers. The 3000 cherry blossom trees were given to our Capital by Yukio Ozaki from Japan in the early 1900's. In return, the US gave flowering dogwood trees a couple years later.

The US Marine Band performance is very snappy and quick-paced. Each member of the band not only played their part of the musical scores, they also have to rapidly get into position via some complex moves (including backsteps) to enable the whole team to construct a new formation. Visually it was very appealing and the speed that the feast was achieved made the viewers admire their precision, co-ordination and team work even more. Bravo to the US Marine Band and the American soldiers who the Canadian troops have often fought with side by side in conflicts around the world. James A. Michener's Centennial came to TV in 1978 as a 12 episode mini-series. (This is a BIG story -- 1795 through 1975; I've tried to trim it as close as possible to just Timothy's character, so naturally the fate of some of the other characters won't be shown in these clips. Don't be afraid to ask if you want to know what happened to somebody ;-) Timothy plays British adventurer Oliver Seccombe who eventually becomes the creator/investor/manager of a 6 million acre cattle ranch in Colorado. Less than two decades ago, Centennial Olympic Park's neighborhood was a run-down part of town. That all began to change on the day Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games CEO Billy Payne gazed out his office window and a brilliant inspiration came to him - to convert a multi-block eyesore into a glorious gathering spot for visitors and residents to enjoy during the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games and for years to come. Atlanta responded to that vision with tremendous support. The estimated $75 million in development costs came entirely from private-sector donations - contributions in the form of commemorative bricks, funds raised by the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and local philanthropic foundation grants. This community support, coupled with the willingness of the State of Georgia to take the lead in the Park's development and to assume ownership after the Games, transformed a dream into a grand reality - Centennial Olympic Park. Following the Olympic Games, a large portion of the park was closed and redesigned for daily public use. A gala commemoration weekend in March 1998 introduced the newly landscaped Park and its expanded amenities. Today, this unique 21-acre park performs a dual mission: it serves as Georgia's lasting legacy of the Centennial Olympic Games and it anchors efforts to revitalize residential and commercial development in Georgia's capital city of Atlanta.
