Thousands of Chasidim flocked to Lizhensk for the 225th yarzheit

Poland - Tens of Thousands of Hasidic Jews today pray at the grave in Poland of one of the faith's most influential rabbis, marking the 225 anniversary of his death. Rabbi Elimelech Weisblum's grave in southeastern Poland will see Jews from across the world come to pray, dance and sing at one of the most significant places in the Hasidic faith. "Der Hilger" Rabbi Elimelach of Lizensk is of singular significance to Chasidim, merely mentioning his name brings shivers to some. In addition to his deep piety and elevated righteous status, he is also the author of the venerated sefer, Noam Elimelach -- one of the principal Chasidic works, which is furthermore believed to be a powerful segulah in many areas. The annual pilgrimage of Chasidim pays homage to his towering greatness. They pray, they sing, they dance, and they worship as one in many moving ceremonies imploring for the merits of their tzaddik to be upon them as well. Many Chasidim go to great lengths as to be present to this emotionally charged event, and it is said that the Rebbi promised anyone who would visit his grave would not leave this world without teshuva. Elimelech lived from 1717 to 1787, and became one of the most important figures in the Orthodox Jewish faith after dedicating his life to studying the Torah. He came to Lezajsk in 1772 and turned it into a center for Hasidism. The town had a big Jewish population before World War II and became again a destination for pilgrims in the 1970s. Bratslaver Chasidim Dancing in the street in Uman Ukraine 2009

Thousands of Hasidic Jews from around the world are gathering in the Ukrainian city of Uman for a yearly pilgrimage marked by singing, dancing and prayer. The pilgrims crowding the city's streets are mostly men in black hats or kippas coming to pray at the tomb of Rabbi Nahman -- a revered leader of their traditionalist movement. On the pilgrimage days for a week around the Jewish New Year, this sleepy, dusty town of 90000 inhabitants some 200 kilometres (124 miles) south of Kiev is transformed into a multilingual hub of the Hasidic movement. The celebrations are a way for Hasidic Jews to get back to the roots of their movement in the heart of eastern Europe more than 60 years after the Holocaust. The stream of pilgrims makes its way down Pushkin street to a large metal structure covering the tomb of Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav and two synagogues filled with believers who pray here for hours on end. Rabbi Nahman, also known as a tzadik or spiritual master, died in Uman in 1810, having urged his followers to gather by his tomb to celebrate Rosh Hashana, or Jewish New Year. This year up to 25000 Hasidic Jews, most of them from Israel and the United States, heed his call and attend the celebrations. The Hasidic tradition, founded in the 18th century in Belarus and Ukraine, places special emphasis on joyous communion with God. The singing and dancing give Uman a festive air. With Hasidic music pouring out of CD-players and laptop computers, pilgrims dance in circles and sing all ...

Satmar Chasidim Protest Israel's 'Cruelty' against 'Starving Mother'

Jewish groups in the United States who are concerned about the ongoing accusations of the Zionist states Hadassah Hospital against an innocent religious Jewish woman whose child was mistreated by the hospital protested outside the hospitals New York office at 50 W. 58th St. this Wednesday, Sep. 16 at 3:30 PM. The child, now three and a half years of age, was hospitalized on and off for the last 18 months, as doctors at the hospital claimed he had some mysterious illness that they could not diagnose. During that time, no less than 45 different tests and procedures were performed on the child, not to mention blood tests and x-rays too many to count. During the last several months, the child was fed only by a feeding tube to his stomach. Many sorts of drugs, some with dangerous side effects, were administered. All these procedures left the child weak and emaciated, weighing half of what a child his age should weigh. When the childs devoted mother was advised by an independent doctor that perhaps there was really nothing wrong with the child and the hospital was just testing drugs and procedures on him, she decided to transfer him out of Hadassah to a different hospital. When the hospital realized that this might lead to bad publicity for them, they decided to accuse her of causing the entire illness. They concocted the preposterous accusation that she was suffering from a mental condition that caused her to deliberately withhold food from her son and lie about his symptoms ...

Klezmer Pioneers [1905~1952] - Die Chasidim Forren Tsum Rebbin (The Chasidim Visit The Rabbi)

Klezmer Pioneers: European & American Recordings, 1905-1952 Various Artists Release Date: Jun 1, 1993 Recording Date: 1905-1952 Label: Rounder Review [allmusic.com] A nice collection of very early recordings of klezmer, roughly half from Bucharest and half from New York. These ones cover the span from 1905 to 1952, essentially starting with the advent of the flat-disc format in Eastern Europe (actual cylinder recordings aren't represented here). There's a decent breadth of sound here, ranging from the familiar orchestral sound of New York klezmer bands catering primarily to non-Jewish audiences to the solo tsimbl (hammered dulcimer) of Eastern Europe. The main item to note here is the way that the album catalogs the semi-gradual shift from the importance of the violin as the primary instrument to the reign of the clarinet. There's some beautiful music on this album, but if you're a klezmer fan who's been self-fed the modern klezmer of groups like the Klezmatics and the Klezmonauts, be forewarned that this is a heavily different sound.
