To demonstrate the improvements on the 2012 Corvette, Chevrolet has returned to the Nürburgring with the range-topping ZR1. As the video shows, the car - which features a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine with 638 hp (476 kW / 647 PS) and 604 lb-ft (818 Nm) of torque - lapped the legendary Nordschleife in 7:19.63 which is more than six seconds faster than the previous Corvette record that was set back in 2008. To get the improved time, the ZR1 was equipped with the new PDE performance package which has a full-width rear spoiler and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires that are "optimized for warm, dry conditions to increase cornering and handling capability." www.worldcarfans.com

Following a leak earlier this week, Chevrolet has released official information about 2012 Corvette. Set to be unveiled this weekend, the updated model is outfitted with new seats, a revised steering wheel and a padded center console. Furthermore, new options include a Bose audio system, a technology package (with GPS navigation) and colored brake calipers (in red, yellow, silver or gray). The mid-level Z06 can be ordered with Performance Traction Management, Magnetic Selective Ride Control, a carbon fiber hood and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires which are "essentially street-legal versions of a racing tire." Likewise, the ZR1 gains a new PDE performance package with a full-width rear spoiler and new aluminum wheels equipped the aforementioned tires. More notably, the car also has a revised transmission - with taller gearing - which enables it to achieve an additional 2 mpg highway. No word on pricing, but production is slated to begin in July. FOLLOW-UP TEST BY EDMUNDS' INSIDE LINE: www.edmunds.com Kicking GM while it's enduring the bitter sting of bankruptcy seems so sophomoric. And so do the massive powerslides we've been doing in the company's 2009 Chevrolet Corvette, so let's begin this review on a positive note by discussing one of the Vette's finer points: Acceleration. First thing you need to know: At wide-open throttle, the LS3 under the Corvette's hood does subtlety like Jessica Simpson does brains. That is to say, not so well — which is awesome, actually. Nailing the gas in this, the tamest of Vettes, is akin to unleashing a thousand pushrod-wielding Hulk Hogans on the car's rear tires. There's a blast of torque followed by a double underhook suplex of forward force. It's as impressive as it is surprising. This is, after all, only a base Corvette. But it's got motor. The LS3 is possibly the best bargain in the world when it comes to eight cylinders arranged in a vee, and it defines the modern Corvette. In our hands it blasts this 3275-pound coupe to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds (4.0 seconds with 1 foot rollout like on a drag strip). But it doesn't stop there. The quarter-mile is incinerated in 12.3 seconds at 116 mph. The trip from 100 to 120 mph takes 4 seconds flat — only 0.3 second slower than the often-drooled-over and far costlier Nissan GT-R. And the fun continues, according to Chevrolet, until 190 mph.

I know many people have been very interested in how fast the ZR1 would be at the Ring... Most car enthusiasts are quite familiar with the Nürburgring. Built in the 1920's near Cologne, Germany, "the Ring" is considered to be the toughest and most challenging race track in the world. Over the last two weeks, we have been doing our final tuning and testing there before we start ZR1 production cars. This morning (Friday June 27), General Motors development engineer Jim Mero drove the Corvette ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4. Jim commented after the lap that conditions were good except for a strong headwind down the main straight and that the lap was solid, but he felt there were a few places he could have gone faster. The car was bone stock with the exception of the communications and safety equipment. The tires were production Michelin Pilot Sport 2's. These tires have been developed specifically for the ZR1 and will have impressive wet traction and wear (tread wear rating = 220), in addition to excellent dry road holding. Chassis alignment and vehicle height were set to factory specs. Likewise, the engine calibrations were absolutely stock, emissions compliant and the car ran on pump (not racing) fuel. The vehicle was exactly like the cars that will be built in Bowling Green, Kentucky and sold around the world later this summer.
