Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Mexican Gray Wolf Introduction

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has a new female Mexican gray wolf named Weeko. She is 6 years old and came from California. The name Weeko is derived from a Siouan expression meaning "beautiful girl." As Weeko explored her new home by herself last week, she stayed toward the top of the exhibit. When she was introduced to our 10-year-old male wolf, Masadi, she seemed comfortable going wherever her male companion went! According to Animal Care Manager, Dina Bredhal, upon meeting the two followed each other and engaged in a lot of prancing and play-bowing. Already showing comradeship, they stood side by side in the "on alert" stance. The two male wolves who previously lived with Masadi are now at the Heritage Park Zoo in Arizona. Be sure to visit the Mexican gray wolves in the Rocky Mountain Wild exhibit during regular Zoo hours.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Elephants Playing in the Pool

Our 3 elephants, Kimba, Lucky and Maliaka love playing in the rain and in their pool! In Colorado Springs, we often have late afternoon showers during the summer. The other day, as we were leaving work, it started pouring outside. We heard the elephants trumpeting and ran over to the exhibit to see what the girls were up to. They were having a blast, playing in their pool, splashing, wrestling, and making mud puddles. It was an amazing thing to watch! Here is some video of it! New Sarus Crane at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

We are excited to introduce you to our new Sarus Crane, Buddy! Buddy came to us from Zoo of Arcadiana in Louisiana this March to be paired with our current Sarus Crane, Ramani. When Buddy arrived we were excited to get him all checked out and through the quarantine period so we could introduce the two cranes. We received a big surprise from our vets after Buddy's physical examine though. Buddy is actually a female! So instead of a mate for Ramani, she has a new best friend and they are doing really well together.
