Chiapas - Mexico

Chiapas is the southernmost state of Mexico, located towards the southeast of the country. Chiapas is bordered by the states of Tabasco to the north, Veracruz to the northwest, and Oaxaca to the west. To the east Chiapas borders Guatemala, and to the south the Pacific Ocean, Chiapas has an area of about 74211 km2 (28653 sq mi). The 2005 Mexican census population was 4293459 people. In general Chiapas has a humid, tropical climate. In the north, in the area bordering Tabasco, near Teapa, rainfall can average more than 3000 mm (120 in) per year.[citation needed] In the past, natural vegetation at this region was lowland, tall perennial rainforest, but this vegetation has been destroyed almost completely to give way to agriculture and ranching. Rainfall decreases moving towards the Pacific Ocean, but it is still abundant enough to allow the farming of bananas and many other tropical crops near Tapachula. On the several parallel "sierras" or mountain ranges running along the center of Chiapas, climate can be quite temperate and foggy, allowing the development of cloud forests like those of the Reserva de la Biosfera el Triunfo, home to a handful of Resplendent Quetzals and Horned Guans. The state capital city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez; other cities and towns in Chiapas include San Cristóbal de las Casas, Comitán, and Tapachula. Chiapas is home to the ancient Mayan ruins of Palenque, Yaxchilán, Bonampak, Chinkultic, and Toniná. As of the mid 1990s, most people in Chiapas were poor ...

A Place Called Chiapas-EZLN

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN) is an armed revolutionary group (VNSA) based in Chiapas, the southernmost, and one of the poorest, states of Mexico. Since 1994, they have been in a declared war "against the Mexican state," though this war has been primarily nonviolent and defensive against military, paramilitary, and corporate incursions on their territory. Their social base is mostly indigenous but they have some supporters in urban areas as well as an international web of support. Their main spokesperson is Subcomandante Marcos (currently aka Delegate Zero in relation to the "Other Campaign"). Unlike other Zapatista spokespeople, Marcos is not an indigenous Mayan. The group takes its name from Emiliano Zapata, the agrarian reformer and commander of the Liberation Army of the South during the Mexican Revolution and sees itself as his ideological heir. In reference to inspirational figures, in nearly all EZLN villages exist murals accompanying images of Zapata, Che Guevara, and Subcomandante Marcos. Their ideology combines libertarian socialism, libertarian municipalism, libertarian Marxism, and indigenous Mayan political thought. They align themselves with the wider anti-globalization, anti-neoliberal social movement and seek indigenous control over their local resources, especially land. The New York Times called the Zapatista movement the first "post-modern" revolution: an armed revolutionary group that has ...

No Son Invisibles: Maya Women and Microfinance, featuring Muhammad Yunus

Buy full DVD version, 54 minutes, by request at mareaproductions@gmail.com "No Son Invisibles: Maya Women and Microfinance" is a documentary shot in HD format using the new Panasonic 200 DVCPROHD. We follow three indigenous women from the highlands into the village of Nachij, stepping deep into their lives and showing how with a small amount of credit they turn dire circumstance into a well of human empowerment that reaches far beyond any regional boundary. Using Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunas' microfinancing formula, a local micro credit organization finds clients who have been forgotten and would otherwise not be able to get a loan, and puts their trustand money in their hands. From an ancient Mayan culture, the women have learned to manage in the modern world by using the money from the loans to start their own businesses, which becomes the sustaining power of their families. The friendships and family relations within the social groups change and become stronger as women helping women not only saves the lives of their families, but entire villages. Produced and directed by Melissa Eidson, who taught English and Drama in high schools in Harlem and Brooklyn and then at Pratt Institute in New York City. She got into making independent films after working with Mexican and American filmmakers in Mexico, where she has lived with her daughter for the past 6 years. Eidson also had several films at Cannes recently, including El Barrio at the Short Film Corner of ...

Agua Azul Waterfall, Chiapas Mexico

Agua Azul Waterfall (Blue-water Falls) is located in the Mexican state of Chiapas, about 42 miles from the Mayan Ruins of Palenque. The exquisite turquoise color occurs because the water is heavily laden with minerals like calcium, which coat the surrounding vegetation and deposit in the stream to create calcified stepping stones. In many places the water descends in two streams, with small islands in the middle. Follow the path up the hillside to a narrow dirt path that branches off to the right. This leads to an overlook (look for the sign tacked to a tree that says "mirador") that offers a spectacular view of the entire cascade as it tumbles down the mountain. Swimming is allowed in the lower pools and restaurants and vendors provide meals and snacks. Most tourists visit this cascade on a day tour from the Mayan Ruins of Palenque. Taking a tour is recommended because this area of Chiapas still experiences Zapatista resistance and the locals hold ropes across the road in an attempt to extort money for crossing into their territory. Most tours combine Agua Azul with a second waterfall, Misol Ha, which is worth seeing but pales in comparison to Agua Azul. Serious Sam: The Second Encounter - Sierra de Chiapas Part One [Secrets Found]

Level: Sierra de Chiapas (Part One) Difficulty: Normal Secrets in this part: Seven Secrets: Twelve It's good to be back! Everything seems a lot more greener this time around. I've even forgotten what the colour of sand looks like. At the crash site, Sam makes a phone call to 'Blondie' (Duke Nukem) in Las Vegas. He's informed he isn't around and will show up when he's done. You see 3D Realms? If you hadn't taken all that time striving for FPS perfection then Croteam wouldn't have to mock you. I'm on their side, the sly dig is well justified now. Finally, ignore the 'Press USE to read the message!' message that keeps showing up after a new area is discovered, a new enemy is killed or a new weapon is picked up. I didn't want to break up the action by scrolling through these messages. It does go away eventually after it realises my ignorance knows no bounds. ---------------------------------------- Secret One: At the start, dive down into the lake to collect a Secret Rocket Launcher (0:19) in a lit spot towards the bottom. Secret Two: As you resurface, look toward the small grassy area (opposite the wooden pier) and approach it. There is some Secret Armor (0:45) lying in wait. Secret Three: In the same area, you should notice a Secret Phone Booth (0:50) tucked away in a corner. Enter it. You can make a call to an old 'friend' if you so wish. Secret Four: When you reach the other end of the valley, veer left from the entrance to the courtyard. Around the corner, towards the ...

This is Chiapas - EZLN - (Trailer)

This is Chiapas (42 minutes 1997). On January 1, 1994, Chiapas Mexico, a group of indigenous people known as EZLN (The Zapatista Liberation Army), declare war against the Mexican government. An interview with two Mexican poets highlights the struggle of the indigenous peoples who have been oppressed since the Spanish Conquest. The images send a reminder to western culture of the concept of people living without hope and yet with the strength to resist, their struggle echoing throughout the world, attempting to make a new life. This is a message for peace, an invitation to solidarity and to a new awareness of the problems of racial discrimination, social exploitation, and of the continuous violation of human rights in countries such as Mexico.

I never knew skeletons could burn so easily. You probably can't tell during the crushing block area, my cockiness almost got the better of me on some occasions. I just managed to keep my ego in check. Apologies for the slowdown at 6:18 & 6:27. My old PC decided to lock up at the most inopportune times. That's why it was consigned to the loft to learn its lesson. ---------------------------------------- Secret Eight: Eventually, you will reach a corridor with crushing pillars (3:28). When you do, turn around and head around the dark corner to find Mental's Secret Room (3:32). Jump on the letters in this order: M, E, N, T, A, L. After this, a part of the wall on the opposite side will slide away revealing a Heart power-up (3:58). If you bounce on an errant letter instead of spelling MENTAL, the spiked ceiling will slowly lower and you may end up impaling yourself on it.
