While Howdy and his friends entertained American children, they also sold television sets to American parents and demonstrated the potential of the new medium to advertisers. The idea for Howdy Doody began on the NBC New York radio affiliate WEAF in 1947 with a program called The Triple B Ranch. The three Bs stood for Big Brother Bob Smith, who developed the country bumpkin voice of a ranch hand and greeted the radio audience with, "Oh, ho, ho, howdy doody." Martin Stone, Smith's agent, suggested putting Howdy on television and presented the idea to NBC televi-sion programming head Warren Wade. With Stone and Roger Muir as producers, Smith launched Puppet Playhouse on 17 December 1947. Within a week the name of the program was changed to The Howdy Doody Show. Children loved the Doodyville inhabitants, because they were a skillfully created, diverse collection of American icons. Some of the stop motion puppets are from a Stop motion Christmas Classic named "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer". The artwork on the label is a set of Borromean rings labelled purity, body and flavor. These are mathematically interesting because all three are interlinked but no two of them are linked. In 1933 the Ballantine company was acquired by two brothers, Carl and Otto Badenhausen. The Badenhausens' grew the brand through its most successful period of the 1940's and 1950's, primarily through clever advertising. Ballantine Beer was the first television sponsor of the New York Yankees. It was during this period that the brand was elevated to the number three beer in the US It was also during this period that the company grew into one of the largest privately held corporations in the United States. Ballantine Beer enjoyed a high level of success into the early 1960's. The brewery had a long sponsorship arrangement with the New York Yankees on television and radio, spanning the 1940s to the 1960s. One of the strangest things I've seen from a classic 1950s TV series, this is certainly bizarre and unexpected. Here, we see Milton Berle seemingly having his party rejected, he then walks thought the back-stages of NBC and into what may have been his dressing room, followed by a short clip of dancers in inverted black-and-white film, followed by Milton walking back up to the soundstage and being greeted by the people who seemingly had rejected his party. It's all very strange, and also has a traditional-pop song playing in the background. But it's also fun to watch, and rather charming.

Changed format half-way through it's only season and became a series about two cave men living in the modern day. My mother says this was a "so silly it's funny" sort of show, she's probably right.
