9b. Cobb-Douglas Utility and Demand
This video introduces the Cobb-Douglas utility function for two goods and demonstrates some of its properties. I demonstrate how to compute marginal rate of substitution for Cobb Douglas utility. I use the resulting expression to show why Cobb Douglas indifference curves have constant slope along rays out of the origin. I also demonstrate how to solve for consumer demand using the Cobb-Douglas utility function. After deriving Cobb-Douglas demand, I show that the alpha share parameter in Cobb-Douglas utility functions actually represents the consumer's expenditure share on that good. This video uses calculus to compute MRS, but after that, the rest is just algebra. If you are a viewer who doesn't know calculus, you can take me at my word, skip the computation of MRS, and the rest of the video can still be worthwhile. This video is a part of my series of video tutorials on introduction-to-intermediate microeconomics. This JJ clip is just like a scene torn out of Steel Magnolias, I can practically feel the drops of sweet, dewey perspiration drippin' down muh brow as I sit a spell under the majestic canopy of the bloomin' dogwood tree down yonder. I can smell the pecan pies as I wash down my 3rd mint julip of the morning and grab for my car keys to make a quick beer run down at the Piggly Wiggly... Hmm, what was I talking about again? Not sure. Very heart warming episode, so definitely not one of my faves. I prefer the ones where Judy is tearing the litigant a new a**hole and calling him;her an idiot. Cobb SF Intake Installed on 2011 Subaru WRX STi Sedan Accessport Cold Air Box Installation
Got my Cobb SF Intake & Cold air box installed this week. Installation was very easy and only took about 45 minutes (with filming) Then flashed the Stage 1 + SF Intake 93 Map with my Accessport. Thanks to Cobb for making a great product. I don't have access to a dyno, but the car definitely feels like it pulls harder up top vs just the regular stage 1 with stock intake. The sound is incredible and I finally feel like my car drives like it should haha. I drove through a pretty heavy rainstorm on the east coast after installation and when I got home I took the cover off the airbox and everything was bone dry, so that is some piece of mind. I would definietely recommend the cold air box they sell, for no other reason then it keeps the MAF sensor and filter under a cover, since normally when I drive in the rain I get some water in the engine bay from the hoodscoop. I guess it's time to start saving up for a downpipe next. Hope you enjoy the video.

Dana Milbank and Chris Cillizza took a lot of heat for their so-unfunny-it-might-be-performance-art video series called "Mouthpiece Theater," particularly a recent piece where Milbank implied the Secretary of State is a "mad bitch." Brilliant, right? These no-production-value pieces have been widely criticized for having all the charm, wit and insight of a frathouse open mic night. It's as if, the critics cry, Milbank and Cillizza thought "gosh, there's a lot of crude, cruel humor on the web, presented on sets that look like they're in someone's mother's basement. To concentrate on that series is to ignore the fact that Dana Milbank has been cranking out incredibly unfunny video on behalf of the Washington Post for a long time now.
