I had only been playing doublebass for a few months at the time of this recordig, so please be lenient with he comments about that ;) For the record, ALL double strokes were played with one pedal, ie the ones at the end of the gutiar solo, as you can very clearly see by how crazily tired I was after that piece :) I would hve LOVED to show you the FootCam of this, but I forgot to rewind the tape for the whole third set, so with a few songs I unfortunately couln't use the FootCam shots. I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song I play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what I play is improvised. Laus Deo Semper www.CobusPotgieter.com http This song has been playing on radios and on tv EVERYWHERE for a long time, so I had the idea to "remix" the track and to give it something extra, in the hopes of giving you guys a fresh take on the song you've probably heard a million times. I asked my good friend JP Smit (guitar genius, WHAT a legend) to write and record some little electric parts of the song, and it ended up giving the song an EPIC rock edge the original didn't have! STOKED. In terms of the drumming, SUCH a cool song to groove to! Could do cool little groovy patterns in the verses, and the choruses are powerful enough to make space for some solid 4/4 driven rock playing, my crashes weren't too happy but oi.. ample fun. An interesting note.. we reskinned the kit right before we started recording, so the skins naturally went out of tune a little, and we had to keep an eye (ear?) on them. Those who know me will know that I am somewhat obsessive about my performances and music that I am a part of, so we did MANY takes, since I really wanted to get it right :) This was obviously the last take, so when we finally nailed it and I knew we wouldn't have to do another take.. I was happy. Very happy. This performance is taken out of the Cobus Method, which is a product I have been working on, focusing on how to play drums by ear. The section that this performance is featured in covers things like writing with a band, where we filmed the whoooole writing process.. from when the first riff was pitched, to choosing the bpm, to doing the arrangement, working out parts, making jokes, mocking each other.. you know, normal band stuff. We wrote and recorded 5 completely original songs, all in very different styles. Laus Deo Semper www.CobusPotgieter.com http "Less is more" cerainly doesn't apply here, haha, definitely one of my most overplayed covers; starting with the song's drumming already being quite busy. LOVED it, though. Zac has a style that I love listening to and it's so much fun jamming along to this song. A technique that I stumbled accross while jamming a week or so before recording these covers, is hitting the cymbals from underneath; and although this looks kind of cool, the main reason is fluidity. I find the action to be much more natural when the stroke comes from exactly where it is; ie I had just finished hitting the floor tom, my hand is already underneath the cymbal, so it makes more sense to just hit it from there, as opposed to lifting it up and THEN hitting it; which equates to double the distance. Those kind of strokes feature quite regularly in the bridge of the song, I love using it. Put simply, the herta is two fast single strokes followed by two slower single strokes. For example, you could play two eighth notes followed by two quarter notes; or, you can play it similar to Cobus and use two 32nd notes followed by two 16th notes. Any combination will work. . I've been playing double bass for about a year and a half now, with most of that time focused on using the heel-toe technique, so I LOVE using it; but (as you can see) I still have to concentrate super hard when doing some intense and extended stuff, aswell as getting a bit tired near the end :) Unbelievable technique though, playing all the strokes as singles would be impossible for me at this stage, so maximum respect for anybody who can do all the double bass stuff with straight up single strokes. As for the genre, not a lot of people know that I LOVE this type of music. Music that is ALL screamo and growling is a bit heavy for me, but post-hardcore and heavy metal that is as melodic as it is heavy is one my all-time favorite genres. Unfortunately I'm not very good at the drumming style yet (any hardcore metal drummers inna house will see that my blasting SUCKS and is actually cheating with the fact that I'm leading with my dominant hand on the snare just playing alternated 16th notes..) and that is the reason why I haven't done any songs like this yet; wanted to get it up to a standard where I felt comfortable posting it on YT (but I'm definitely going to keep working at it). During September 2010 I flew to Spain for three weeks, recording and producing the song, aswell as being part of the most intense music video shoot I have ever seen. It was during this trip that I also shot my newest series, almost due for release. Executive Producer on the song was Iago Pico, Director for the music video was Jairo Iglesias. I was really scared of doing a praise+worship song as a "cover" since I find it pretty darn weird jamming and improvising (and especially "entertaining"..) with a song intended to give glory to God. A lot of people have been asking about a few p+w songs, so I decided the only way I could record it was if I in fact really DID praise and worship God while playing this, so I got really into it :) Because of that, this is a really personal performance, and i'm a bit scared of uploading it; I don't hold back at ALL. Laus Deo Semper. I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums (or lack thereof), through the WHOLE song I play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, since 99% of what I play is improvised. Even though I have done my fair share of session and studio drumming, that has little to zero effect on these video's, I kind of see them as live performances. I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself.
