Custom Fiberglass Cowlings for my 1/14th scale Super Constellation RC Model

I have been building this model for last 6 years, finally build is coming to end with few more steps to go. It has been long build, totally scratch build from ground up from factory drawing and manuals, now i'm looking forward to it's taxi tests, pre-flight and 1st maiden flight tests. Everything on this model is made from scratch structurally including all the landing gears. Model will eventually have nav lights, landing lights, cowl flap doors, landing gear doors all functional. Model will be fully covered in aluminum foil tape or films like Flitemetal.

Flite Test - Cowling Install - FLITE TIP

Flite Test - Cowling Install - FLITE TIP If planes have mustaches, then they must have faces, right? In this Flite Tip, the Joshes tell us that the cowl is the face of the plane, and going on the idea that you only have one chance to make a good first impression, you better make sure the face of your plane looks it's best. Josh Bixler shows a simple yet very effective way of making sure you line your cowl up perfectly while Josh Scott breaks out some helpful colloquialisms. With some simple materials that you likely have on hand, you'll be able to mount the cowl right the the first time, making your plane pretty enough for that video close up. Keeping it that way will be up to you. A Hobby King sponsored segment.

Primer/Sealer Painting Motorcycle Front Cowling

NOTE: Please check your volume (compressor noise is loud and there is no talking in this video) This is Mike putting on the first coat of primer/sealer on the front cowling over the original burgundy color. You can see the areas that he did bodywork on (the primer spots). The bodywork took about two weeks. About six hours everyday after work, including weekends. We spent about nine hours in the paint booth that day. I am in there to move things around, take pictures, empty the water traps on the compressor, act as an extra set of eyes for missed spots and runs, mix paint. Basically a gopher, but a darn good one! Total coats on the first round: 2 coats of primer/sealer, 3 coats of white, 2 coats of blue pearl and 2 coats of clear. This paint job ended up bubbling in quite a few places (it was really hot and humid that day, even with the air conditioner in there) and so two weeks later we were back in the paint booth, having sanded everything down again. The second time we added blue pearl ghost flames and then one more coat of blue pearl over the whole thing then two more coats of clear. Finally, it came out amazing. For this paint job, I actually took the camera in the paint booth with us and stored it in a ziplock bag between filmings so the quality is much better. If you are paying attention you will notice that Mike is completely ambidextrous, something that never ceases to amaze me.

The XP-47B was all-metal construction (except for fabric-covered tail control surfaces) with elliptical wings, with a straight leading edge that was slightly swept back. The cockpit was roomy and the pilot's seat was comfortable—"like a lounge chair", as one pilot later put it. The pilot was provided with every convenience, including cabin air conditioning. The canopy doors hinged upward. Main and auxiliary self-sealing fuel tanks were placed under the cockpit, giving a total fuel capacity of 305 US gal (1155 l). WASP pilot Deanie Parish on the flightline at Tyndall Field, Florida, in the early 1940s in front of an early P-47 Power came from a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp two-row 18-cylinder radial engine producing 2000 hp (1500 kW) and turning a four-bladed Curtiss Electric constant-speed propeller 146 in (3.7 m) in diameter. The loss of the AP-4 prototype to an engine fire ended Kartveli's experiments with tight-fitting cowlings, so the engine was placed in a broad cowling that opened at the front in a "horse collar"-shaped ellipse. The cowling admitted cooling air for the engine, left and right oil coolers, and the turbosupercharger intercooler system. The engine exhaust gases were routed into a pair of wastegate-equipped pipes that ran along each side of the cockpit to drive the turbosupercharger turbine at the bottom of the fuselage about halfway between cockpit and tail. At full power, the pipes glowed red at their forward ends and the turbine spun at 21300 ...
Planishing Reverse Curve on an Indian Sidecar Cowling

Plashing of the front cowling on an Aluminum 1948 Indian sidecar body. The first phase of this operation involved peaking the cowling down the center line as per original. Then, gently hammering the aluminum along the edges working across and in.

Avid Flyer Stol Cowling Test

after making a new cowling; I performed a 40 min taxi to see the effect of the engine temperature on the cowling, and I found several mistakes.. 1.- The upper cowling was hot. Poor air circulation inside the cowling. 2.- the pilot side of the cowling was showing burning marks because of the exhaust pipe being 5 cm close to the cowling. 3.- the radiator was vibrating too much. 4.- the opening below was too little and rubbing the muffler the corrections; worked well.... 1.- Cut 2 holes, one at each side of the spinner to keep the upper cowling cold and reduced also the air temperature inside. 2.- Molded a vent in the side to keep a flow of air between the exhaust and the side wall. 3.- Reinforced the cowling and mounted the radiator on the cowling itself, this improved the vibration problems. 4.- Cut a bigger hole around the muffler to avoid contact and this also helped the air flow inside of the cowling, keeping the temperature down. All the corrections were done step by step, and I carried a test each time.... I´ve not tested in the cold winter, but if the engine show too cold, I can just simply close one of the vents, to increase temperature. I´m happy with the results, I think I just need to do a better cosmetic job on the final cowling....

The Light Cycle

The Light Cycle. Description This is the illuminated, street-legal motorcycle inspired by the computer animated cycle from the 2010 film Tron: Legacy. Designed for casual cruising and slow ride-bys at shows, it is made from a steel frame covered by a fiberglass cowling that replicates the sleek look of its computer-generated imagery counterpart. Electroluminescent strips built into the tire cowlings, wheel rims, and body illuminate the cycle. It is powered by a fuel-injected Suzuki 996cc, 4-stroke engine. Riders lay at a near-horizontal position astride the padded leather seat, with feet on foot pegs that control its 6-speed constant mesh manual transmission and hands on the handlebars for throttle and braking. The hubless wheels are former truck tires built up then custom-shaped to fit onto one of two counter-rotating rims spinning within each other, providing the broad-tired authenticity of the computer cycles from the movie. A chain-driven friction drum manages acceleration and braking from the handlebars. It has spring-loaded front and rigid rear suspension. Its wet sump lubrication system eliminates tubes and hoses for oil pick-up, facilitating its streamlined, minimalist design. It uses a 3 1/2-gallon main fuel tank and 1 1/4-gallon reserve tank. All cycles are built to order. 8 1/2' L x 23 1/4" W x 28 1/2" H. (474 lbs.) Price: $55000

Engine Cowling

This video shows how the Geo Metro engine fits nicely inside the stock Rotax 912 engine cowling. As you can see the cowling is very shallow. This is obviously just a mock up and more work is needed. The spinner is not fitting properly in the video. Watch the other video showing the engine with the cowling off.
