DARPA Robot Masters Stairs

This video shows versions of DARPA and Boston Dynamics robots climbing stairs, walking on a treadmill and doing pushups. A modified platform resembling these robots is expected to be used as government-funded equipment (GFE) for performers in Tracks B and C of the DARPA Robotics Challenge (www.darpa.mil The GFE Platform is expected to have two arms, two legs, a torso and a head, and will be physically capable of performing all of the tasks required for the disaster response scenarios scheduled in the Challenge. However, despite the appearance of the robots in the video, the Challenge is decidedly not exclusive to humanoid robot solutions. Any designs are welcome provided they are compatible with shared human-robot environments, compatible with human tools, and compatible with human operators so that a human without expertise in robotics can give commands and confidently anticipate the response. It is DARPA's position that achieving true innovation in robotics, and thus success in the Robotics Challenge, will require contributions from communities beyond traditional robotics developers. Hardware, software, modeling and gaming developers are sought to link with emergency response and various science communities to devise novel solutions that enable robots to respond to disasters according to the tasks laid out in DARPA's announcement (go.usa.gov for the Challenge.

DARPA Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) program

In 2005, DARPA announced the Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) program and its goal to develop agile and flyers system that could fit in one hand. This video chronicles the development of a "hummingbird" flyer by Aerovironment from concept to prototype demonstration and introduction to the public. A number of difficult design and engineering challenges were overcome in the course of the program, particularly in the wing structure, propulsion and control actuators. Numerous complete prototypes were built and tested to assess and improve the performance of the systems shown in the video. The final prototype achieves the noteworthy milestone of 2-wing flapping hovering and fast forward flight with all power sources on the aircraft and all controls implemented through modulation of the wing strokes in a shape that resembles a real hummingbird and carries and on-board camera that relays video to the pilot in real time. DARPA's Robotic Suspension System - M3 Program

The use of ground robots in military explosive-ordinance-disposal missions already saves many lives and prevents thousands of other casualties. If the current limitations on mobility and manipulation capabilities of robots can be overcome, robots could potentially assist warfighters across a greater range of missions. DARPA's Maximum Mobility and Manipulation (M3) program seeks to create and demonstrate significant scientific and engineering advances in robot mobility and manipulation capabilities. This video shows a modified iRobot 510 PackBot equipped with an advanced suspension system maneuvering on a test course. The compliant suspension improves the robot's mobility over rough and uneven terrain. The technological enhancement enables faster transit speeds, climbing of very steep slopes, improved heading control, greater accommodation of debris entering the suspension and reduced impact forces on carried payloads. M3 is a research program aimed at improving robot capabilities through fundamentally new approaches to the engineering of better design tools, fabrication methods and control algorithms. The program covers scientific advancement across four parallel tracks: design tools, fabrication methodologies, control methods and technology-demonstration prototypes. The prototypes demonstrated are designed to test technological advances in robotics across a range of functions, and are not necessarily intended to enter production for military use. DARPA HTV-2: 13000 mph Hypersonic Glider Test Resulst Revealed

An ultra-fast US military drone that streaked across the sky at 13000 mph and met its demise in the Pacific was doomed by the excessive heat of hypersonic travel, which literally peeled away the drone's metal skin, military officials have revealed. A seven-month study by the military's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, has found that the so-called Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) amazingly recovered from shockwaves that forced it to roll while traveling at Mach 20 (about 20 times the speed of sound) in an August 2011 test. But the unmanned aircraft was unable to cope with damage to its exterior caused by its extreme speed, DARPA officials said. There is a full article on the HTV-2 here, www.space.com

DARPA's Disaster Robot Design Contest

Many humans don't enjoy cleaning up disastrous messes—which is why DARPA wants robots designed to clean up for us. The Defense Advanced Research and Planning Agency, or DARPA, has announced a robotics challenge with $2 million in prizes in the hopes that corporations and universities might produce the ultimate mechanized maid—one that can go where humans can't to help clean up after a large-scale disaster. Inspired by difficulties with man-made cleanup efforts in the wake of the Fukushima disaster in Japan last year, the competition wants robot designs capable of specific tasks, including driving a vehicle to a simulated disaster site, moving across rubble, and finding and closing a valve on a leaking pipe. The competitions for cash prizes are expected to be held in 2013 and 2015, and DARPA officials are encouraging international participation.

DARPA Legged Squad Support System (LS3)

Today's dismounted warfighter can be saddled with more than 100 pounds of gear, resulting in physical strain, fatigue, and degraded performance. To help alleviate the impact of excess weight on troops, DARPA is developing a highly mobile, semi-autonomous four-legged robot, the Legged Squad Support System (LS3). LS3 includes onboard sensors to perceive obstacles in its environment and path-planning capabilities to avoid them. The LS3 platform is designed with the squad in mind and is therefore significantly quieter, faster and has a much higher carrying capacity for longer mission durations than DARPA's earlier mobility technology demonstrator BigDog. The LS3 prototype recently completed its first outdoor assessment, demonstrating mobility by climbing and descending a hill and exercising its perception and autonomous follow-the-leader capabilities.

Dr. Regina Dugan, DARPA Cyber Colloquium

During the Colloquium, more than 700 cyber experts from industry, academia and the hacker community learned how since 2009, DARPA has been steadily increasing its cyber research. Its budget submission for fiscal year 2012 increased cyber research funding by $88M. Over the next five years, the Agency's proposed cyber research investment expects to grow from 8 to 12 percent of its top line. These investments are shifting to activities that promise more convergence with the threat and recognize the unique needs of DoD. Dugan explained, "in the coming years DARPA will focus an increasing portion of its cyber research on the investigation of offensive capabilities to address military-specific needs."

Darpa - Time Travel Andrew D. Basiago part 1

playlist www.youtube.com attorney Andrew D. Basiago shared an update on his truth campaign involving time travel technologies. In discussing a recent news story about DARPA's advancement in video surveillance that could end public anonymity, he declared that "DARPA had far surpassed the performance of this kind of technology 40 years ago when I was serving on Project Pegasus" (as a child). He believes we're being prepared for the eventual truth about chronovision (technology to view past or future events), as well as teleportation into different times. The chronovisor, he explained, "generates a hologram of a past or future event...by driving an electromagnetic signal through an octagonal, an eight-sided array of bismuth crystals." Basiago admitted that he hasn't seen the technologies since 1972 (when he left the program), and they may have been shelved, but, he added we do have some clues that chronovision persisted and was implemented by the US intelligence community. For more, see recaps from his show appearances on 11/11/09, and 11/11/10. He'll also be doing a speaking engagement this weekend in Los Angeles. Website: www.projectpegasus.net

DARPA's Falcon Vehicle Test Results Released

Transcript by Newsy: www.youtube.com BY LEAH BECERRA ANCHOR LAUREN ZIMA It's a bird, it's a plane-- no, it's a Falcon! Well, it's the Pentagon's Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's first Falcon test run took place last August. The results for that test, along with results from a similar test a month ago, were finally released this week. As far as most people can see both trials failed, KETK explains the first test run. "For nine minutes ...[ DARPA] flew its Hypersonic Technology Vehicle at speeds reaching 20 times the speed of sound -- fast enough to fly from New York to Los Angeles in less than 12 minutes. But then, something went wrong..." The outer shell of the Falcon basically started peeling off. DARPA initially offered no explanation for why this happened. After testing the second Falcon vehicle last month though, the falcon's difficulties were made clear. Fox news spoke with a technical adviser about the tests. "I have to emphasize, this is very difficult problem they're trying to solve. They're trying to develop a vehicle that can travel at immense speeds through the upper atmosphere, with high forces and very high heat..." On top of just creating a vehicle to withstand this environment, DARPA scientists are also trying to control the Falcon. The goal is a weapon that can destroy a target within a window of mere seconds. Even though both tests failed the LA Times points out the good news. "The flight successfully ...

DARPA's Resource-Gathering Social Media Game Will Help Us After the Apocalypse

What do you get when you combine QR codes, social media, and visions of the apocalypse? DARPA's new scavenger hunt with cash prizes, of course! The Defense Advance Research Projects Agency wants us to hunt down hospitals, reservoirs, and other resources that could prove important in a scorched landscape. You know, for practice! The game, called CLIQR Quest, wants contestants to compete for $40000 by finding and logging QR codes throughout the continental United States to "represent the dispersion of resource concentrations throughout the country." The apparent goal is to learn how people can use technology to help emergency workers assess damage and remaining resources after a large disaster. The catch is that even Carmen Sandiego couldn't collect them all with a private jet, so contestants need to use their own powers of social media, app development, and most importantly—collaboration—to win. So sharpen your post-apocalyptic bartering skills ... unless you want to just keep playing Farmville.

DARPA Decides the 'Avatar' Program is Worth Looking Into

BY LEAH BECERRA The Department of Defense's advanced research agency, DARPA, is looking to bring a little Sci-Fi to real life. Engadget explains. "Think Terminator meets Avatar. The agency has set aside $7 million of [its] $2.8 billion 2012 budget to develop an 'Avatar program'". The program's goal is to create bi-pedal robots, machines that walk on two feet like humans, that soldiers can interface with. Should DARPA's research succeed; machines would fight as a soldier's surrogate -- Terminator-style. But CNet explains this isn't so far-fetched. "... consider that the technology to control a humanoid robot with a brain-machine interface, while rudimentary, has been around for years, as shown with Honda's Asimo robot." Honda's robot, reported on in 2009, uses the brain's electrical brainwaves and cerebral blood flow to control the bot's movements. This isn't DARPA's first robotic project either. Last week, the agency released updated footage of 'robodog.' It's designed to follow soldiers and carry their equipment. Basically, this isn't a new idea, but The Verge points out, having a smaller budget than Avatar could be an issue down the road. "...[DARPA's] budget isn't nearly as large — the film Avatar cost over $230 million. And if you've ever watched it, you'll remember how well the program actually worked out for the military..." The success of the Avatar program would mean more safety for soldiers in war zones. So, unless DARPA changes its name to Skynet, no one should ...
