Whilst the idea of a flash mob isn't a new thing, a Dabke / Hip-Hop flash mob in Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport (Beirut Duty Free) at a time when the region is in flux is certainly a first. On March 5th, 2011, passengers experienced something a little different. A flash mob performed a mix of Dabke and hip-hop to entertain and delight passengers and airport staff alike. M&C Saatchi and Beirut Duty Free, created this vibrant event as part of their "Take Back More." campaign. The aim was to literally create a wonderful memory of Lebanon that passengers could take with them on their journey. This is a video from the Palestinian village of Faqqua. The traditional dabke is danced on special occasion such as weddings and graduation parties. This recording is not the actual wedding, but a so called "Sahra", which take places the night before.

Dabke (Arabic: دبكة; also transliterated as dabka, and dabkeh) is the national dance of Lebanon. It is also popular in Palestine, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq. It is danced by both male or female with different steps and different rhythms being more common in different areas of the Middle East. Dabkeh is a dance of community, often performed at weddings and other joyous occasions such as family parties or competitions. Like other folk dances of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Greece, Armenia, and Eastern Europe, dabkeh is a line dance. At times dabkeh can be formed into a semi circle. Usually the leader of the dabkeh would be in the front of the line or out of the line alternating face to face to the audience and the other dabkeh dancers. Many learn dabkeh as children and as they become better at dabkeh, they would join well known dabkeh groups. The meaning of "dabkeh" in Arabic is "stomping of the feet", and stomping, as well as jumping and kicking, are moves that characterize the dabkeh in a unique manner. The leader, called raas (meaning "head") or "lawwih" (meaning "waver"), is allowed to improvise on the type of dabkeh being danced, and he or she would also be twirling a handkerchief or string of beads known as a masbha (similar to a rosary), while the rest of the dancers keep the rhythm. The dancers also use vocalizations to show energy and to punctuate the rhythm. However, it is also a dance of solidarity and a way of expressing nationalism and the age-old presence of art <b>...</b>

The Lebanese Folkloric Dabke Group of Canberra AND the Deir Al Ahmar Youth Association Dabke Group @ Deir Al Ahmar Youth Association's Annual Party, NSW, Australia, 5 June 2010. Mary sings the traditional 'Zagharit' for her beloved 'Deir Al-Ahmar' and the youth from this village. The Dabke is accompanied by the sounds of the traditional Levantine 'Mijwiz' and the 'Tabl'. 'Mijwiz' means "dual," or "married" in Arabic, because of its consisting of two, short, cane reed pipes put together, making the mijwiz a double-pipe, single-reed woodwind instrument. It requires a special playing technique known as "circular breathing," which produces a continuous tone, without pausing to take a breath. 'Tabl' means "drum" in Arabic. Its shell is made of hard wood, perhaps walnut or chestnut, though many woods may be in use depending on the region where the drum is made. The heads are usually donkey or goat skin, and they are shaped into circles by wooden frames. The drummer plays the accented beats with the dominant hand on the side of the drum with the thicker skin, using a thick pipe-like stick which is often made with walnut. Unaccented beats are played by the nondominant hand on the side of the drum having the thin skin, using a thin stick often made from soft wood such as willow or cornel.
