The US envoy for North Korean human rights attended the graduation ceremony, which was an emotional experience for many students. Seventy-seven defectors from North Korea graduated from their high school in South Korea on Friday (February 11), in a ceremony attended by the US special envoy for North Korean human rights. The defectors collected their diplomas from their Hangyoreh Middle and High School in Anseung, south of Seoul. The school was set up in 2006 to prepare the young defectors for the huge changes they face living in a capitalist state. Robert King, the US Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Issues, congratulated them on their graduation. But their families in North Korea are pleaing for their return, likely under pressure from authorities in the North. Families of four North Koreans who said they want to defect to the South have made emotional appeals for their kin to return home. The appeals were made in videos aired on a website operated by the North's propaganda agency. [Rim Young-ok, Wife of Defector Ok Sung-hyeok]: "I'm torn up as my husband and brother-in-law are detained in South Korea and cannot return home for more than a month." Four of the 31 North Koreans had drifted across a tensely guarded sea border between the two Koreas and have expressed their wish to defect. They say they miss their families left in North Korea and hope to be united soon. Ahead of the Lunar New Year, North Korean defectors in South Korea express mixed feelings, as they celebrate one of the most important holidays away from their families. According to the lunar calendar, the Year of the Rabbit begins on Thursday. About 200 defectors gathered recently to participate in a singing contest organized by a local district office. The women later made traditional North Korean dumplings, reminding them of home. [Kim Soon-shil, Defector]: "I missed my brothers and sisters more than usual while making dumplings to celebrate Lunar New Year holidays. Keurosing Crossing 1 of 10 Crossing is a Korean movie which is going to be aired in late June 2008. The movie is based on a real story about the life of a North Korean defector and his family. Actor Cha In-pyo starred as a North Korean coal miner who crossed illegally into China to get medicine for his wife. His wife passed away soon after he crossed the border, and he was separated from his 11-year-old son (played by Shin Myung-chul) who was trying to trace him from North Korea. The story shares the hardship of North Korean refugees in the late 1990s, with famine striking the country and killed an estimated 1 million people. The North Koreans couldnt cross into South Korea directly because of landmines and heavy military presence at the border these defectors had to cross into China and made a de-tour to South Korea instead. The Chinese government, an ally of the North Korean regime, does not recognize the defectors as refugees and would send them back to North Korea to face stiff action. Crossing will represent South Korea as a candidate for the foreign film category at the 81st Academy Awards.
