7/14 - A few years ago a portable jukebox was discovered which belonged to John Lennon in the 1960s. The jukebox conntained a tracklist of 40 records - soul, R&B and Rock 'n' Roll - written in Lennon's own handwriting. These are the songs which shaped his musical education and they reveal many of the original sources of inspiration for his later songwriting.

Delbert McClinton - Come Together
Come Together is a song written primarily by John Lennon. The song is on the Beatles 1969 album, Abbey Road. The song reached the top of the charts in the US and was later covered by several other artists such as Aerosmith and The Rolling Stones. As for the wacky lyrics, don't try to interpret them. In a 1980 interview John himself said, "It's gobbledygook. 'Come Together' was an expression that Tim Leary had come up with and he just asked me to write a campaign song. (For office he was running for in Calif.) I tried and tried but I couldn't come up with one. I came up with this, 'Come Together' which would have been no good to him. You couldn't have a campaign song like that, right?" I am a Delbert McClinton fan so I'm uploading his version. Although it may not be the best I'm sure that many people have never heard his version. And maybe you also didn't know that Del taught John Lennon to play the harmonica.

Delbert McClinton - I'm With You
I'm don't really know how to catagorize McClinton's music. I just have to say he pretty much has his own style. I would say it's a soulful combination of southern country-rock and R&B. Even though he's been around for awhile, I just discovered his music a few years ago and I love it. And since being fortunate enough to see him perform live, I've become even more of a fan. This song is from his 1990 album, Never Been Rocked Enough.

Delbert McClinton, one of the most laid back by the haystack guys around. Sandy Beaches, my personal favorite has only one flaw: It lasts only 3 minutes. Oh well, it's a great 3 minutes as Barry Beckett produces and his piano slot is taken by ultra-talented John Jarvis and trust me, he does not disappoint here.
