Stanford Students Design Recyclable Laptop with Autodesk Inventor Software

A class of Stanford University graduate students have been honored as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for October for developing a prototype of the recyclable Bloom laptop. The Bloom is the project of a team of students from Stanford and Finland's Aalto University who were given the task to create a recyclable consumer electronics product that makes electronics recycling a simpler, more effective and engaging process for consumers. The students used Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Inventor Publisher software to help develop and refine the innovative laptop during the school year. Creating 3D digital prototypes of the hardware components inside the laptop aided in creating a readily accessible laptop design that is also easy to disassemble. When separated into different material types — such as plastics, metals and circuitry — the Bloom laptop's modular design makes it easy for consumers to decrease the amount of electronic waste added to landfills. For example, 1.9 to 2.2 million tons of electronics became obsolete in 2005, with only 345000 to 379000 tons being recycled. The Bloom can be disassembled in just two minutes, without tools and in just 10 steps. By comparison, a commercially available laptop takes about 45 minutes to disassemble, requires three separate tools and involves as many as 120 steps.

Shit Graduate Students Say

This project is dedicated to the graduate students of the world, especially those in biomedical science. Keep reaching for that rainbow. CMA, DXM, and AJR all contributed to the development and design of the project. CMA wrote the script. DXM and AJR reviewed the script for intellectual content and provided additions. DXM provided his likeness and feigned emotions onscreen as directed by CMA. AJR shot and edited the project. Funding was supplied by FML #1123581321 awarded to CMA, DXM, and AJR. The authors disclose that despite years of trying to cultivate lucrative conflicts of interest none of them have paid off in a meaningful way. Becoming a Graphic Designer and what it's really like - Part 1 of 4

I'm Phoebe. Nice to meet you and welcome to my first post! :) This blog is for uni students, high school students or people who are looking for direction in their career path. I'll be uploading interviews with people and asking them a series of questions to do with their job and these interviews will be conducted casually. Everyone interviewed will be asked the same series of questions and additional questions and requests for certain jobs are welcome, though I cannot guarantee I will absolutely know everyone in every possible field. :P The content in the interviews are not necessarily tips and tricks, but rather hearing their experience and what they did to get to where they are and maybe what they wished they did, should they have wanted to do anything different.

Students Compete to Find Tech Solutions for World Problems

This is the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Hundreds of students from around the world recently gathered in New York City for the Microsoft Imagine Cup finals. They came to present their ideas for using technology to solve world problems. Microsoft education director Suzi Levine says the nine-year-old program began mainly as a competition to create technology. She says, "When we realized that students really actually want to have a purpose for what they're creating, we introduced the idea of inspiring them with the UN Millennium Development Goals and suggesting that they use those for their muse." New sources for ideas this year included intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations and nonprofits. They can submit some of the technical challenges that they would like students to consider for their solutions.Microsoft says over three hundred fifty thousand high school and college students registered for this year's competition. Judges chose more than four hundred of them to attend the finals. Ms. Levine says several teams were inspired by current events, including floods last year in Thailand. A team from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand "created a Windows Phone 7 application that allows you to broadcast your location to your social network of friends so that you can be more easily rescued." There were also ideas from Egypt inspired by the revolution that overthrew president Hosni Mubarak in February. Ms. Levine says one <b>...</b>

Judgement Day: Intelligent Design on Trial 1 - PBS Nova

Judgement Day: Intelligent Design on Trial - PBS Nova In 2004, the Dover school board ordered science teachers to read a statement to high school biology students suggesting that there is an alternative to Darwin's theory of evolution called intelligent design--the idea that life is too complex to have evolved naturally and therefore must have been designed by an intelligent agent. The teachers refused to comply. Later, parents opposed to intelligent design filed a lawsuit in federal court accusing the school board of violating the constitutional separation of church and state.
