Bo Diddley - You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover

He only had a few hits in the 1950s and early '60s, but as Bo Diddley sang, "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover." You can't judge an artist by his chart success, either, and Diddley produced greater and more influential music than all but a handful of the best early rockers. The Bo Diddley beat -- bomp, ba-bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp -- is one of rock & roll's bedrock rhythms, showing up in the work of Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, and even pop-garage knock-offs like the Strangeloves' 1965 hit "I Want Candy." Diddley's hypnotic rhythmic attack and declamatory, boasting vocals stretched back as far as Africa for their roots, and looked as far into the future as rap. His trademark otherworldly vibrating, fuzzy guitar style did much to expand the instrument's power and range. But even more important, Bo's bounce was fun and irresistibly rocking, with a wisecracking, jiving tone that epitomized rock & roll at its most humorously outlandish and freewheeling. Before taking up blues and R&B, Diddley had actually studied classical violin, but shifted gears after hearing John Lee Hooker. In the early '50s, he began playing with his longtime partner, maraca player Jerome Green, to get what Bo's called "that freight train sound." Billy Boy Arnold, a fine blues harmonica player and singer in his own right, was also playing with Diddley when the guitarist got a deal with Chess in the mid-'50s (after being turned down by rival Chicago label Vee-Jay). His very first single, "Bo Diddley"/"I <b>...</b>

The Story of BO DIDDLEY - Eric Burdon & The Animals (incl. lyrics)

Rock´n Roll history lesson: A virtual concert....some vid material I cut together over the audio, to visualize this great song, rather than just posting some still pics... Now listen here to the story of Bo Diddley And the Rock n Roll scene in general Bo Diddley was born Ellas McDaniel In a place called McComb, Missississipi about 1926 He moved to Chicago about 1938 Where his name was eventually changed to Bo Diddley He practiced the guitar everyday and sometimes into the night Till his papa's hair began to turn white His Pa said "Son, listen hear, I know You can stay, but ..ah...that guitar has just got to go" So he pulled his hat down over his eyes Headed on out for them Western Skies I think Bob Dylan said that He hit New York City He began to play at the Apollo in Harlem Good scene there everybody raving One day, one night, came a Cadillac, four head lights Came a man with a big, long, fat cigar said, "C'mere son, I'm gonna make you a star" Bo Diddley said, "Uh..whats in it for me?" Man said, "Shut your mouth son, play your guitar and you just wait and see" Well, that boy made it, he made it real big And so did the rest of the rock n roll scene along with him And a white guy named Johnny Otis took Bo Diddleys rhythm He changed it into hand-jive and it went like this In a little old country town one day A little old country band began to play Had two guitars and a beat up saxophone When the drummer said, boy, those cats begin to roam Oh baby oh we oh oh Ooh la la that <b>...</b>

The Diddley-Bow.. "...Grandfather of all blues guitars!..."

Since this has only one string, you can call it a Diddley-Bow, a truly ancient instrument of African origin, widespread and well-used in the southern United States a long, long time ago. Simple as they get, yet very expressive! "...The grandfather of all blues guitars!..." A buddy of mine assembled this CBG and sent it to me to arrange the final result to my own taste. Good cooperation, I think .. I'm calling it: The Kicking Mule Special..

One String Guitar Thing... $2 Electric Guitar... Diddley Bo, Lap Slide, Junk Project

A simple one string "diddley bo" lap slide guitar made from an old piece of wood a couple of nails, a Piezo Transducer 273-073 from Radio Shack, a 1/4 mono input plug, a piece of wood for the bridge, a rubber band, a small tin can, a roll of tape and one old guitar string. The Piezo Transducer 273-073 cost about $2 at Radio Shack, I also got the 1/4 mono input plug and extra wire at Radio Shack. . . everything else I found around the house. The tin can originally housed cough drops, but you can use a tuna can or snuff can or any number similar of items. I removed the Piezo Transducer from it's plastic shell and tape it into the tin can. I place the guitar bridge (small piece of wood) on top of this. You can tune the thing by moving the bridge up and down the neck of the guitar Nothing about this is original, it's just my version of a basic Diddley Bo
