HoloDesk is a novel interactive system combining an optical see through display and Kinect camera to create the illusion that users are directly interacting with 3D graphics. A virtual image of a 3D scene is rendered through a half silvered mir- ror and spatially aligned with the real-world for the viewer. Users easily reach into an interaction volume displaying the virtual image. This allows the user to literally get their hands into the virtual display. A novel real-time algorithm for rep- resenting hands and other physical objects, which are sensed by the Kinect inside this volume, allows physically realistic interaction between real and virtual 3D objects.

I pay way more attention to electronic display devices than I should. They interest me greatly, especially those with unique characters inside, whether used or not. That's why I picked up the Bearcat 210XL scanning radio shown in this video. Every one of these I have ever seen has had an LED display, but not this one! I also talk about some of the most common problems with these radios. There are other things that can and do go wrong--the sci.electronics.repair FAQ site has a good document on those. After looking into it some more, I believe the automobile from which these scanners took their name was the Stutz Bearcat.

Head-Coupled Perspective on Mobile Devices. We track the head of the user with the front facing camera in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction. It does not use the accelerometers and relies only on the front camera. LAS VEGAS (01/05/2011) -- Sony is working on a futuristic head-mounted display that immerses the viewer in 3D video. The device, which is still only a prototype, was unveiled at a Sony news conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Wednesday evening.

ImpAct is a stylus which can dynamically change its effective length and it is equipped with sensors to calculate its orientation in world coordinates. When a user pushes it against a touch screen, physical stylus shrinks and a rendered projection of the stylus is drawn inside the screen giving the llusion that it submerged into the display device. Once user can see the stylus immersed into the digital world below the screen, he/she can manipulate and interact with the virtual objects with active haptic ensations. Project was developed under masters degree program in Keio Media Design, Keio University, Japan. ImpAct was demonstrated at ACM UIST 2010, NY and to be published in ACM Computers in Entertainment and ACE 2010, Taipei in November 2010.

Toshiba's found an interesting use for flexible LCD technology: user input. At SID 2010, the Japanese display manufacturer showed off an 8.4-inch wide, 0.1mm thick SVGA panel that could be grabbed and physically bent to zoom in or out using Google Earth. While it's a far cry from 6DOF and perhaps not as entertaining as controlling the time-space continuum with forefinger and thumb, the bend sensor seems like an obvious addition to the gamut of crisp, rollable, data storing, energy generating flexible tech already in development. It's also worth noting that Toshiba isn't the only one working on the idea; IBM filed a patent application for "flexible displays as an input device" back in 2006. Video after the break.

Got a Kinect for Father's Day. After two nights of hacking with the new SDK, I created this holographic display effect. What you're seeing is a monitor lying flat on a table. The Kinect detects the position of your head and the software adjusts the image to give the illusion of an object standing on the monitor. This is not post-processing like most AR demo's you see. The software consists of my own simple 3D engine and a very simple vertex shader to do the transformation of the perspective.
