The Rock Island Line. Donegan

Early Lonnie Donegan 1957..... The concealed 'pig iron' might be referring to smuggling slaves to freedom. "Rock Island Line" is an American blues/folk song, which was performed and first recorded by Lead Belly in the 1930s. Versions of the song have been recorded by many other artists. While the song is ostensibly about the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, from the lyrics there is evidence to suggest that the "railroad" referred-to is actually the Underground Railroad, a slave escape route Wikipedia

Battle of New Orleans ::: Lonnie Donegan and Lyrics

The Battle of New Orleans, singer Lonnie Donegan in 1959, is a light hearted view of the brave defence of New Orleans in 1815 led by Andrew Jackson against the British Army. The Battle of New Orleans was a prolonged battle which took place around New Orleans, Louisiana from December 23, 1814 to January 26, 1815, and was the final major battle of the War of 1812. American forces, commanded by General Andrew Jackson, defeated an invading British Army intent on seizing New Orleans and the vast territory America had acquired with the Louisiana Purchase. Battle of January 8 Within minutes, the American 7th Infantry arrived, moved forward, and fired upon the British in the captured redoubt: within half an hour, Rennie and most of his men were dead. In the main attack on the right, the British infantrymen either flung themselves to the ground, huddled in the canal, or were mowed down by a combination of musket fire and grapeshot from the Americans. A handful made it to the top of the parapet on the right but were either killed or captured. The 95th Rifles had advanced in open skirmish order ahead of the main assault force and were concealed in the ditch below the parapet, unable to advance further without support. The two large main assaults on the American position were repulsed. Pakenham and his second-in-command, General Gibbs, were fatally wounded, while on horseback, by grapeshot fired from the earthworks. With most of the senior officers dead and wounded most of the ...

THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL - Lonnie Donegan

The legend of The Midnight Special is that a train would pass the prison each day at midnight and its headlight would flash through the bars and into the prison. The superstition was that if the light shone on you, that meant you would be the next man to get out of the prison. Lead Belly saw John Lomax as his Midnight Special, his way to get out of Angola. He asked Lomax to record a song he had written, a plea to Louisiana Gov. OK Allen to release him from prison. Lead Belly asked Lomax to deliver the recording to Gov. Allen. At the end of the song, Lead Belly made sure to tell the governor his given name and exactly where he could be found in prison. Then in the late 1950's Lonnie got it into the charts and from then on.. Or.... The Midnight Special is a replay of the auld devil's black coach or hunt or horse myth which is coming to take us all away. ...................... Coming for me soon :-(

Railroad Bill - Lonnie Donegan

The death of Railroad Bill - Private detectives, rail detectives, lawmen, and citizens were after Bill, or at least the $1250 reward on his head. A posse was taking a break in the store of Tidmore and Eard in Atmore when a lone, black man with a slight limp walked through to the counter. Nobody paid him much attention except the storekeeper who recognized him as Railroad Bill. After Bill's last visit, the storekeeper placed a double barrel shotgun within reach so that he might win that reward. He was so afraid of Bill that he didn't go for the gun. Bill sat himself on a barrel and proceeded to snack on crackers and cheese, the posse continuing their conversations just across the room. Leonard McGowin had recognized Bill going into the store. Again, Bill's reputation, the legend that he could only be killed by a silver bullet, his known ability with a gun, caused McGowin to hesitate. McGowin went around to a side door and fired his rifle from outside, issuing a fatal wound. On the way down, Bill went for his gun, but was hit again by a shotgun blast from the storekeeper. It took the startled posse a moment to figure out what was going on and then they opened fire on the corpse. Railroad Bill's body was strapped to a board. His guns were placed on his person and he was placed on public display. In every "colored waiting room", in every major depot, from Atmore and Brewton to Montgomery, citizens were given the chance to pay 25 or 50 cents to view the remains or have their ...

Bye Bye Boogie Dorothy Donegan.mov

Bye Bye Boogie Dorothy Donegan 1987 Pianist Dorothy Donegan in Concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1987 With her are bassist Major Holly and drummer Oliver Jackson. From the "Last Post" The death of Dorothy Donegan this past spring (May 19, age 76, Los Angeles) was lamentably largely ignored by the press and the jazz media as they did regrettably throughout most of the pianist's lifetime. The AP wire did give the indomitable artist lead preference in its daily obits round-up and the New York Times, with its promise of "All the News That's Fit to Print," gave Dorothy her due, including a one-column candid photo of the pianist in performance, and jazz author Chip Deffaa warmly recalled her "strength, energy, and imagination" in his New York Post column. Interestingly, though, Times jazz scribe Ben Ratliff quoted his noted jazz predecessor, John S. Wilson's coverage of a Town Hall appearance in 1971 citing that '"Ms. Donegan showed a technical virtuosity that could be compared only to that of Art Tatum and a swinging drive that might be equaled by Mary Lou Williams." Oddly omitted was the Wilson quote that Donegan carried ever closest to her heart, ". . . She is potentially the greatest jazz pianist playing today." A reflection on this comment comes into focus with Chip Deffaa recalling in his obit, "She was probably the only jazz artist who, in the 1990's, could somehow satisfy the very different audiences of the Village Vanguard (the high temple of jazz purism) and ...

station of knocklong - Johnny Donegan

The mighty Johnny 'The Fiddler' Donegan sings this fine song which describes the story behind an IRA prisoner, Sean Treacy who in May 1919 was rescued from an armed RIC escort at Knocklong Railway station in Co.Limerick Lyrics: The Station of Knocklong The news has spread through Ireland and spread from shore to shore, Of such a deed no living man has ever heard before. From out a guarded carriage mid a panic stricken throng, Sean Hogan he was rescued at the station of Knocklong. When a guard of four policemen had their prisoner minded well, As the fatal train sped oer the rails conveying him to his cell. The prisoner then could scarce foretell, of hearts both brave and strong. That were planning for his rescue at the station of Knocklong. The shades of eve were falling fast when the train at last drew in. It was halted for an hour or so by a few courageous men. They sprang into the carriage and it did not take them long. Hands up or die, was the rebel cry at the station of Knocklong. Now King Georges pampered hirelings they shrivelled up with fear, and thought of how they placed in cells full many a Volunteer. Now, face to face with armed men to escape how they did long. But two of them met with traitors deaths at the station of Knocklong. From Sologhead to Limerick such deeds as these were never seen, And devil a tear was ever shed for Wallace of Roskeen. They did old Englands dirty work and did that work too long. But the renegades were numbered up at the station of ...
