Purple drank, also known as "Sizzurp," is a recreational drug popular in the hip-hop community, particularly in the southern US The main ingredient in purple drank is prescription-strength cough syrup that contains the drugs codeine and promethazine. To make purple drank, the cough syrup is mixed into a soft drink like 7-Up, or possibly with fruit juices or even wine. Pieces of Jolly Rancher candy or other hard candy may be added. Why purple drank? The concoction gets its name because the cough syrup's dyes are often purple and, when mixed with a clear soft drink, the mixture takes on a purplish hue. Other possible slang terms for purple drank include "syrup," "purple jelly" and "lean." The "lean" term was coined in part because drinking the concoction can cause users to lose their balance and lean to one side. Purple drank has been touted in rap songs by numerous hip-hop artists, including Three 6 Mafia. In 2000, Three 6 Mafia released the song "Sippin' on Some Syrup," which brought the term "purple drank" to a nationwide audience. The group's song "Rainbow Colors" pertains to the consumption of purple drank; the addition of a Jolly Rancher candy to a cup of purple drank creates a spectrum of colors, hence the name. While "purple drank" may seem interesting, consuming such a potion can be extremely dangerous. Experts ...
