DRESDEN

Brief photo slideshow of the city of Dresden. Dresden is the fourth largest urban district in Germany after Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne. It lies on both banks of the river Elbe, and was sometimes called "Elbflorenz" (Florence of the Elbe) as it offers to the visitor plenty of Baroque-style architecture and numerous world-renowned museums and art collections. Dresden was the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony. The controversial bombing if the city during WWII by the British and the US Air forces, which completely destroyed the inner city changed the face of Dresden broadly, but considerable restoration work has settled the damage. During the German Democratic Republic, it emerged as a major industrial centre and a cultural, political, and economic centre in East Germany, and many block apartments were build. The original parts of the city are almost all in the districts of Altstadt (Old town) and Neustadt (New town). When I visited it, in 2006, it still seemed that the whole place were under reconstruction. I hope that within the next few years I will have the opportunity to visit Dresden once more, and admire it in full glory. Music: Brahms Hungarian Dance N° 20 in E minor
