Roadfly tested the completely updated and redesigned 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SEL. Major competitors for this German sport sedan include the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Mazda3. When reviewing a car like the Jetta one of the things we look for in the road test is how well the Jetta compares to others in its class. The relatively inexpensive compact car segment is crowded to say the least. Depending on your perspective, Nissan has either completely broken the mold or completely jumped the shark with the new Murano CrossCabriolet. Completely overhauled and redesigned for 2011, the all-new Kia Sorento boasts a fresh look and some cool new features. Host Emme Hall spent a week in the SUV and was thoroughly impressed. Previously based on a truck's frame, the 2011 has been turned into a more reliable unibody frame, and the Sorento is all the better for it. The engine is improved as well--our tester came with a 3.5L V6 engine with 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque, as well as the drivetrain changing from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive. Gas mileage is roughly 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Inside, the Sorento has room to spare. With a new third row of seats, you can fit up to 7 passengers inside this modestly-sized crossover. With the seats down, your cargo space is enormous and well-suited to haul whatever your junk might be. The interior, in addition, is improved. Amenities are bountiful, you have Bluetooth/wireless integration, iPod connectivity, dual-zone climate control, a whole slew of audio and satellite radio options. The seats are a little on the plain side, but match well with its no-nonsense exterior. Plus, the two-row sunroof is a great and much-appreciated addition. And, all things considered, the list of safety options on the Sorento is staggering, with an onslaught of airbags and electronic safety features that will surely make for a safe ride for you and your family. The 2011 Range Rover is the ultimate off-road machine, and it's been recently updated for more luxury and a more functional interior, as well as improved aesthetics inside and out. It has a 5.0L V8 producing 375hp and 375 lb-ft. of torque, mated to a 6-speed automatic with "CommandShift" function channeling power through all 4 wheels. The Range Rover buffs its off-road credentials with a two-speed transfer case of the electronic variety, with an electronic center differential. There's a dizzying array of off-road specific driver-controlled settings to play with, like Gradient Release Control and Hill Descent Control, as well as the advanced "Terrain Response System" with settings for General, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock. Our test car wore almost $12000 in optional equipment, pumping its as-tested price up to $90735 from a starting MSRP of $78835. The Subaru WRX, a game-changing sport compact over the last decade, is a constant work in progress, with significant changes made in almost every production year. 2011 is no different—the WRX gets the widebody kit of its big brother, the 305-hp WRX STi. That gives it a much more aggressive look, and a wider track. There are new wheels in a 17x8 size, up 1 inch in width from 2010. These changes conspire to add 33 lb to the '11 WRX's curb weight. Despite that, the WRX is still extremely fast for an AWD compact car, in fact even faster to 60mph than the STi. The 2011 Subaru Forester, as reviewed by our host Emme Hall, retains much of 2010's model's simplistic looks and drivetrain, save a few key differences. For 2011, the Forester has an upgraded engine that boosts key areas in horsepower, torque, and gas mileage. The new engine is a 2.5 liter 4-banger that gets 170 horsepower and 174 pound feet of torque, making gas mileage 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. You can also choose to get a different trim with a turbocharged version of this engine, which will produce roughly 50 more horses and pound-feet. And all of these transmissions can come in either manual or automatic. And of course, the Forester without question gets Subaru's infamous all-wheel drive, letting the Forester hit the trails with ease. Handles are smooth and precise thanks to the AWD, and performs with aplomb. Not to mention its awesome 8.7 inches of ground clearance! Inside and out, the Subaru is functional but not stylish. Its form won't turn any heads, but what it lacks in aesthetics it more than makes up in practicality and user-friendliness. The space inside this crossover is roomier than one would expect, and the standard amenities are passable; trip computer, bluetooth & iPod integration, panoramic sunroof. As you ascend the trim levels, amenities start piling up, the more expensive trims feature rearview cameras, portable TomTom navigation screen, and more. The stylish and slick Audi A4 returns for 2011 with an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission that raises fuel economy to a remarkable 22 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway. Its engine is a 2 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that musters 211 horses and a decent 258 pound-feet of torque. We would've liked to see more power out of the A4, considering its main competitors, the BMW 3-series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, easily outshine the A4 when it comes to power and acceleration. However, Audi's standard all-wheel drive gives the ride a very stable and competent feel, you'll never feel out of control in the A4. And the interior of the A4 is where Audi might just take the lead in its class in terms of quality. The standard leather is much more plush than you might find in a 3-series or a C-Class without adding more and more additional packages. The infotainment screen is well implemented and convenient, you're never at a loss for intuitive response from all of your car's amenities. With a base price of $34140, the Audi A4 is a strong and beautiful competitor to more expensive competition from other European manufacturers, for those who perhaps prefer efficiency and style over raw driving power. Hyundai's Elantra, redesigned for 2011, is taking at the compact segment's big boys. It undercuts heavyweights like the Civic and Corolla in price, and offers a fuel economy rating that Hyundai has vigorously defended. The company insists that all Elantras regardless of equipment level or transmission will achieve the same 40mpg highway mileage rating. True to Hyundai form, it offers lots of cool features for the money (heated front AND rear seats, navigation, and a 'smart key' system) and the output of its 1.8L inline-four is surprisingly vigorous, at 148 horsepower and 131 lb.-ft of torque. It's not exactly fast, but Hyundai sells other cars for that. Our test car started at $17080, but the Elantra line starts at just $15550—an MSRP more at home in the subcompact segment, and an extraordinary value. Mazda's 6 sedan, redesigned for 2009 with a big boost in power, visited the Roadfly office for a week. We first tested the Mazda 6 in California back in 2009. The car has received some minor updates and is still one of the funnest sport sedans in the mid-size car category. The new(ish) 6 is quick (0-60 in 6.7 sec.), gets decent fuel economy, and has the enthusiast-preferred shift pattern for its 6-speed automatic. (pull down for upshifts, push up for downshifts). We had the chance to do 0-60 MPH tests in the new 2012 Boss Mustang. This car is fast... very fast!!!! The RoadflyTV crew of Charlie Romero, Emme Hall and Ross Rapoport took the 2012 Boss Mustang to an Autocross course to see how it would handle. While we were there we had the chance to repeatedly test how fast this new Mustang could get to 60 MPH. We had some very fast 0-60 times but our best run was 0-60 MPH in 3.93 seconds. The surface was very sticky, the car was fully warmed up, the weather was perfectly cool. Everything stacked in favor of this new mustang breaking the 4 second barrier.
