The English Language In 24 Accents

Me attempting to do 24 different accents from my own country and from other countries around the world. Hopefully I got most of them right but I may have made mistakes and I can do some better than others. However, I made this video for my friends because I promised them I would do an accent video. I mean no offence to anyone and please don't be upset if I have not included your specific accent or got it wrong. Please enable and read the annotations too, as they explain a few things. Also please note that I learned most of these accents randomly off of TV, movies and video games over the years and some can be very stereotypical. And yes, I am filming in the garden shed lol as its more quiet in there.

There are a lot of Yakko's World videos on YouTube so here's a less popular but equally impressive performance. This is found on Animaniacs Vol. 3 as a cold opening and segway between segments. Again, I would highly recommend purchasing these DVDs, a very good buy for the young and the young at heart! tinyurl.com Update: I recently got an offer to be made a YouTube partner because of the high view count on this video...thanks everyone! I mean, I'm not gonna do it because then they would probably realize that this video is illegal, but it's nice to get the offer :) Lyrics: Aardvark, abating, abet, abdicating Abandon, abase and abreast Ablaze and ablution, abhor and abusion Abbreviate, abbey, abscessed. The Future of the English Language

Words, phrases and idioms reflect the world around us. If you don't believe us, check out "word of mouth" on radio 4: www.bbc.co.uk When bundled together into languages, all those words start to reflect how power is distributed in the world. Take the English Language. There used to be a very direct relationship between the English language and the imprint of Britain's influence around the world -- the global era however, has made this relationship less clear. English is no longer a natural source of natural competitive advantage for the UK. As a Brit you can forget your phrase book when you go and holiday and it's probably no big deal -- but if you think that's going to help you in the workplace, forget it. More English speakers, means more competition for your job and it means your desk can be shifted to another country when market forces demand it. The English Language now has many shareholders, and The English are just one of them. In Britain, from a policy perspective, it's time to rethink how we teach English, our whole attitude to languages, to reflect our changing relationship to the rest of the world. For more see this Demos publication www.demos.co.uk In response to this work, two graduates from the Royal College of Art, Susan Ibreck and Celia Willis have produced this short film.

History of the English Language (1943)

More from our archives: film.britishcouncil.org The British Council Film Collection is an archive of more than 120 short documentary films made by the British Council during the 1940s designed to show the world how Britain lived, worked and played. Preserved by the BFI National Film Archive and digitised by means of a generous donation by Google, the films are now yours to view, to download and to play with for the first time. History of the English Language acts as an excellent layman's introduction to the origins of one of the most common languages on the planet, demonstrating how dialect changes over time, and presenting England as being multicultural right down to its roots. This is a comprehensive introduction to the English language. Through its depiction of English as a worldwide language, it clearly promotes not only Britain's power in the world, but also its multiculturalism. The foreign language in the titles is apparently Indonesian, so one must assume that this was shown there. This might explain the simple illustrations of each word or people mentioned in the film. Germany is included in this origins story, although, having been made during wartime, it is not as heavily featured as it would in an unbiased edition. Whilst the war is not openly discussed, one excerpt is especially telling: the narrator states "The German language also produced words associated with war, such as plunder", along with the image of a uniformed man fiddling with coins in a chest.
