Rose's Turn-Gypsy-Ethel Merman

I've listened to the other divas on YouTube singing "Rose's Turn," from "Gypsy." I keep hearing about Ethel Merman's original Broadway Version, but couldn't find it on YouTube so I'm posting the audio. (I've created a repeating video montage of some of Merman's photos, for visual interest). How do you think she compares to the divas that followed her? : Angela Lansbury, Rosalind Russell, Bette Midler, Tyne Daly, Patti Lupone, Liza Minelli, Bernadette Peters,Betty Buckley, etc? Who gives your favorite vocal delivery? Who's acting of the song moves you the most? Enjoy!

The Merman Medley

In the early 1950s, Ethel Merman began singing a special arrangement of a dozen or so of the classic showtunes she introduced on Broadway. Roger Edens provided the "Lady with a Song" introductory verse. This 1960 performance is updated to include "Small World" from Merman's current show, "Gypsy." For technical reasons, Merman was required to lip-synch the medley for TV instead of singing live. However, this ten-minute traversal of "Ethel's Greatest Hits" does offer a sense of the performer's legendary onstage electricity.

"Miss Otis Regrets" (Ethel Waters, 1934)

A charmingly sinister tale, elegantly told by Ethel Waters. One of Cole Porter's quirkier and more ghoulish tunes: MISS OTIS REGRETS Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today, Madam. Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today. She is sorry to be delayed, But last evening down in Lover's Lane she strayed. Madam. Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today. When she woke up and found, that her dream of love was gone. Madam. She ran to the man who had lead her so far astray. And from under a velvet gown, She drew a gun and shot her lover down, Madam. Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today. When the mob came and got her and dragged her from the jail, Madam, They strung her from the old willow cross the way. And the moment before she died, She lifted up her lovely head and cried, Madam. Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today. Miss Otis regrets... she's unable to lunch today... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More, from our friends at Wiki: Miss Otis Regrets is a song by Cole Porter from 1934. It was first performed on stage by Douglas Byng in Hi Diddle Diddle, which opened October 3, 1934 at the Savoy Theatre, London. However, the song was originally written for Ada "Bricktop" Smith[1] to perform. "Miss Otis Regrets" is a song in the blues style, and Porter's wry take on some common lyrical subject matter of the genre, telling the tale of a woman who comes to a bad end after an encounter with a man. But Porter's peculiar twist is that Miss Otis is a polite society lady ...

Ethel Waters - I've Found a New Baby (1925)

Ethel Waters (oct.31,1896 - sep.1,1977) was an American blues and jazz vocalist and actress. She was born to a 12 year old mother, Louise Anderson, who had been raped by a white man, John Waters. Although she was raised by her maternal grandmother, she took her father's surname. Reared in poverty, she left school at the age of 13 in order to support herself through domestic housework. Waters performed for the first time at the age of five in a children's church program. She was called Baby Star and later, performing on the black vaudeville circuit, became known as Sweet Mama Stringbean. After moving to New York City in 1919, at the start of the Harlem Renaissance, Waters recorded songs for Black Swan Records and then Colombia Records while playing in revues and performing on the white vaudeville circuit during the 1920s. Two of her more popular songs were "Dinah" (1925) and "Stormy Weather" (1933). By refining the lyrics and the performance, Waters introduced urban blues to a white audience. Her stylistic alterations created a niche for the black nightclub singers who gained popularity from the 1930s through the 1950s. In 1927, Waters career as an actress began with the musical Africana. She played singing roles in other Broadway productions: Blackbirds (1930), Rhapsody in Black (1931), As Thousands Cheer (1933), At Home Abroad (1936, and Cabin in the Sky (1940). Waters played more dramatic roles in Mamba's Daughters (1939) and The Member of the Wedding (1950). Appearing ...

Ethel Waters - Shoo Shoo Boogie Boo (1929)

Ethel Waters (Oct.31,1896(1900?) - Sept.1,1977) was an American blues and jazz vocalist and actress. She frequently performed jazz, big band, rock and roll and pop music, on the Broadway stage and in concerts, although she began her career in the 1920s singing blues. She was the second African American ever nominated for an Academy Award. Waters was very talented and had many achievements. After her start in Baltimore, she toured on the black vaudeville circuit. As she described it later, "I used to work from nine until unconscious." Despite her early success, Waters fell on hard times and joined a carnival which traveled in freight cars to Chicago, Illinois. She enjoyed her time with the carnival, and recalled, "The roustabouts and the concessionaires were the kind of people I'd grown up with, rough, tough, full of larceny towards strangers, but sentimental, and loyal to their friends and co-workers." She did not last long with them, though, and soon headed south to Atlanta, Georgia. There, she worked in the same club with Bessie Smith. Smith demanded that she not compete in singing the blues opposite her, and Waters conceded to the older woman and instead sang ballads and popular songs and danced. Though perhaps best known for her blues singing today, Waters was to go on to star in musicals, plays and TV and return to the blues only periodically. She fell in love with a drug addict in this early period, but their stormy relationship ended with World War I. She moved to ...
