This is a video created by one of my students to summarize the research we conducted on the effects of Twitter on student engagement and grades. The journal article summarizing the study and our findings is available online at: onlinelibrary.wiley.com Abstract Despite the widespread use of social media by students and its increased use by instructors, very little empirical evidence is available concerning the impact of social media use on student learning and engagement. This paper describes our semester-long experimental study to deter-mine if using Twitter -- the microblogging and social networking platform most amenable to ongoing, public dialogue -- for educationally relevant purposes can impact college student engagement and grades. A total of 125 students taking a first year seminar course for pre-health professional majors participated in this study (70 in the experimental group and 55 in the control group). With the experimental group, Twitter was used for various types of academic and co-curricular discussions. Engagement was quantified by using a 19-item scale based on the National Survey of Student Engagement. To assess differences in engagement and grades, we used mixed effects analysis of variance (ANOVA) models, with class sections nested within treatment groups. We also conducted content analyses of samples of Twitter exchanges. This is my entry into the Legend of the Five Rings Video Contest for the Race for the Throne. It's a fan video I made during my spare time in the last few months. I recently graduated with an animation focus, but I don't animate outside of my own free time, so it's nice to practice my skills now and again. It's far from perfect, but I think it turned out OK considering my limited skill and the equipment I have on hand. It's also too bad that YouTube cuts down the framerate so bad... Anyway, it's inspired equally by the art of Iaido and the fantasy world of Rokugan. Enjoy. Declared as an outstanding pistol design in my November 2008 initial tabletop review, the S&W M&P9 now is proven as such in TNP. Much shooting in both range and tactical fashion has only endeared me more to the design. It is a good looking, low recoiling, well-built pistol with excellent ergos. At 28 or so ounces it is still light enough for most service pistol roles, depending on loadout. The sights are excellent low profile Novaks and enable the gun to be shot accurately with good speed. Lefties shoud rejoice because the M&P pistol series feature reversible magazine releases and the low profile slide stop is already on both sides. Field strip is easy and fast although I deem the take down/sear deactivation tool unnecessary. The S&W M&P Pro series gives improvements to the trigger (4.5 to 5 lbs stated) but I found nothing wrong with it as is. OK This knife failed me while undergoing batoning tests. Granted it was probably due to the pivot screw lossening which allowed the liner lock to slip into the pivot area and bend. Lesson learned: despite it's looks it's probably not the best folding "survival knife" out there; use a fixed blade for strength. But beyond that the CRKT M21 and M18 series offer outstanding value for the price paid: high quality AUS8 blade steel, superb finishing on blade and handles, fast flip opening, excellent jimping (a necessity sans thumb ramp), tight lockup (batoning not withstanding), narrow tip configured for proper tip up carry, and overall rugged good looks. Downsides might include heavier carry weights, lack of clip versatility, and somewhat abrupt hollow grinding inhibits slicing performance (compared to several flat ground offerings like the SOG Flash). But for around $40, it's still a heck of a lot of knife and should wear well. A veteran chaster fan since late 2006, early 2007. Been a fan of her since the original "Coolsmurf" vid. Back then Coolsmurf's video when first viewed it only had 500k viewers and the only other vids available were her singing karaoke and local shows in the Phillipines. I am not a filipino, I am however, an admire of her great talent. She shall not be denied that. Credit goes to a chaster fan. Here we experience an amazing performance of Charice in her native language. She is destined for superstardom beyond those of who we know as superstars alive today.
