The EFV (Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle)

The General Dynamics Land Systems EFV is an amphibious armored tracked vehicle with an aluminum hull. The EFV has a crew of 3pax and can transport 17 Marines and their equipment. The aluminum hull has caused some controversy due to protection and flammability concerns. However, aluminum hulls have been used for decades in military ground vehicles and boats. The rear loading ramp is not able to open while the vehicle is afloat. This is also typical of other swimming military ground vehicles. For example, the M113 is another armored military ground vehicle the US currently is using that swims. It also has an aluminum hull, and its rear ramp cannot open while the vehicle is afloat. The engine is a custom MTU Friedrichshafen diesel (MT883) with two modes of operation; a high power mode for planing over the sea, and a low power mode for land travel. The hull has a hydraulically actuated bow flap to aid planing. Shrouded Honeywell waterjet propulsors are integrated into each side of the hull and hydraulically actuated chines cover the tracks while in seafaring mode. The Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) is the newest USMC amphibious vehicle, intended for deployment in 2015. This vehicle is an amphibious armored personnel carrier; launched at sea, from an amphibious assault ship beyond the horizon, able to transport a full Marine rifle squad to shore. It will maneuver cross country with an agility and mobility equal to or greater than the M1 Abrams. The EFV is designed to ...

WWII Italy 1944-BEF-Brazilian Expeditionary Force

The Brazilian Expeditionary Force was a force about 25700 men and women arranged by the Army and Air Force to fight alongside the Allied forces in the Mediterranean Theatre of World War II. Brazil was the only South American country to send troops to fight in the Second World War. This air-land force fought in Italy from September of 1944 to May of 1945, while the Brazilian Navy as well as the Air Force also acted in the Atlantic Ocean from the middle of 1942 until the end of war. During the eight months of the Italian campaign, the Brazilian Expeditionary Force managed to take 20573 Axis prisoners, including two generals, 892 officers and 19679 other ranks. During the War, Brazil lost 948 of its own men killed in action across all three services. The Brazilian 1st Division of the BEF fought with the 15th Army Group under Field Marshal Harold Alexander (later succeeded by General Mark Clark), via the US Fifth Army of Lieutenant General Mark Clark (later succeeded by Lieutenant General Lucian Truscott) and the US IV Corps of Major General Willis D. Crittenberger. The entry for the Gothic Line order of battle provides the overall order of battle for the Allied and German armies in Italy. The BEF achieved battlefield successes at Massarosa, Camaiore, Monte Prano, Monte Acuto, San Quirico, Gallicano, Barga, Monte Castello, La Serra, Castelnuovo, Soprassasso, Montese, Paravento, Zocca, Marano su Panaro, Collecchio and Fornovo.

Obama Deploys US 22nd Marine Expeditionary Force To The Libyan Coast

Twenty-two hundred Marines and sailors from Camp Lejeune are preparing to deploy off the coast of Libya in northern Africa. They said goodbye to their families Monday afternoon, and they'll be leaving in the days ahead. The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit was set to deploy to the Mediterranean later this year but that got bumped up once NATO forces launched an air assault on Libya. The unit is relieving the 26th MEU, which took part in some of the initial assaults. The 22nd is a Marine, air and ground task force. Some are trained for aviation combat, others for ground combat. They can handle evacuations and humanitarian missions too.Whatever the president decides ......

UCLA's Peter Narins' lecture on frog communication

Peter Narins, UCLA distinguished professor of physiological science and of ecology and evolutionary biology, has been conducting pioneering research for more than 30 years on the mechanisms underlying the evolution of sound and vibration communication in amphibians and mammals. He discovered the mechanism that prevents the sensitive inner ear of a frog from being overstimulated when males produce extremely high-intensity calls. Narins has led or participated in nearly 50 overseas research expeditions. He is an editor of the Journal of Comparative Physiology and an elected fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, the Acoustical Society of America, the Animal Behavioral Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Proud To Be Greek - Greek Army in the Korean War (1950-1955)

The Greek Expeditionary Force (GEF) in Korea (Greek: Εκστρατευτικόν Σώμα Ελλάδος, abbreviated ΕΚΣΕ) was formed in response to the United Nations appeal for assistance in the Korean War. It comprised a reinforced Hellenic Army infantry battalion and a Royal Hellenic Air Force (RHAF) flight of 7 transport planes. The seven C-47s of 13th Flight, with 67 Air Force officers and personnel, departed from Elefsis air base at 08.30 of 11 November 1950. They belonged to the 355 Transport Squadron, known for its participation in the recent civil war. The majority of the officers and NCOs of this first mission were experienced airmen, veterans of the Middle East campaigns of WWII and the Greek Civil War. On 3 December 1950, the first Greek aircraft landed on Korean soil. Immediately the Greek flight was attached to the 21st Troop Carrier Sq. (later renamed 6461 TC Sq.) of 374th Wing of the USAF, based initially at Daegu. From 14 May 1951, the flight was based at Kimpo air base where it remained until 23 May 1955. During its time in Korea, the Greek Flight carried out 2916 missions, comprising air evacuations, transports of personnel, prisoners drops of supplies and ammunition, replenishment of allied bases and collection of operational information. In total, its planes carried 70568 passengers, including 9243 wounded. It logged 13777 flight hours. Losses included 12 officers and NCOs, and 2 C-47s. Originally, the Greek government intended to send a brigade to Korea, but with the ...

USMC MEU Amphibious Landing Exercise

A Marine Expeditionary Unit is the smallest Marine Air-Ground Task Force in the United States Fleet Marine Force. Each MEU is an expeditionary quick reaction force, deployed and ready for immediate response to any crisis. The Marine Expeditionary Unit is normally built around the building blocks of a MAGTF: a reinforced Marine infantry battalion is the ground combat element, the aviation combat element is a composite helicopter squadron, a battalion-sized logistics combat element, and a command element. Troop strength is about 2200, commanded by a colonel, and is deployed from an amphibious assault ship.

1940 The Anzacs arrive in the Suez

British Newsreel. February 22, 1940. 2ND AUSTRALIAN IMPERIAL FORCE When the war broke out, there was controversy over whether Australia should concentrate on forming an expeditionary force for overseas service to fight Germany in Europe or a home defence force to fight Japan. Prime Minister Robert Menzies decided to do both, although the experience of the Great War indicated that Australia did not have the resources to do either. On 15 September 1939, Menzies announced the formation of the Second AIF, an expeditionary force of 20000, to consist of one infantry division plus whatever auxiliary units the Army could pack into the rest of the troop ceiling. On 15 November 1939, Menzies announced the reintroduction of conscription for home defence service effective 1 January 1940. Unmarried men turning 21 in the year ending 30 June 1940 would be drafted into the Militia. Because of this, the AIF could not accept personnel who were in reserved occupations. 2ND NEW ZEALAND EXPEDITIONARY FORCE The 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force - at the outbreak of war in 1939 it was decided that New Zealand should provide an Expeditionary Force of one division, under then Major General Bernard Freyberg. This force became known as 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force and the division as 2nd New Zealand Division. The first echelon of 2NZEF Headquarters and a Brigade Group landed in Egypt in February 1940.
