Glenn Gould discusses his chair

A staged clip wherein Glenn obviously feels some need to comment in formal terms upon the simple matter of the unusual, and low, folding chair that he always used whilst playing. Not much explanation in this short clip, unfortunately, but we get to see him set it up and drop hints about the importance of the thing as implement, as well as allude to some obvious long-term annoyance with people's bewilderment regarding it.

Chirinuruwowaka

(Please say "hello" if you are from Japan!) This is a side project band for the immensely talented "Yuu" Nakashima of (maybe) the world's best currently working rock trio GO!GO!7188, who have been performing and making records since the 90s. I like to believe quite seriously that if she were from the west that she'd be as well-known world-wide as Sting or Sheryl Crow or whomever.

Emi and Yumi

Westerners will know the two women in this ensemble piece from a Japanese variety program as the very tiny magical twin beings called Shobijin in 1964's Mothra vs. Godzilla. The duo are Emi and Yumi Ito aka The Peanuts . Addendum: don't miss these two in their sensational appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in New York from the 1960s, which is in my "Favorites" section here from grt1374's terrific channel.

"Room 222"

The (I think) very winning intro to this dramatic-comedy television series from the late 60's/early 70s which portrayed the urban American public, or "state" (to you Brits) school system in a realistic yet hopeful manner. Of course, that's the redoubtable Jerry Goldsmith's theme music in 7/4 time. en.wikipedia.org

Peter Sellers imitating Laurence Olivier

Here's famed film comedian Peter Sellers expertly imitating Laurence Olivier's interpretation of Shakespeare's Richard III from Olivier's celebrated film - whilst reciting The Beatle's lyrics of "A Hard Day's Night"... ya' got all that? This is obviously from a special on British tv hosted by The Beatles, themselves, thus you have the intro by Paul and John. Sellers is really very good, here, isn't he? "Can I do all this yet cannot get a hit?"

Cornelius with Kahimi Karie "Moonwalk" and ""69-96 Girl Meets Cassette" NHK Broadcast

"Come on, Baby, let's moonwalk on the moon" I am VERY sorry that the aspect ratio is incorrect. If I can find some way of correcting it, I will do so. This is not a clip that I got from a tape, but online, not sure where. I don't like using "Favorites" too much on here, even if it was from youtube - the Favorites feature clutters things up, at times. Cornelius, of course, is Keigo Oyamada, and he is doing some sort of NHK broadcast, here, possibly at Christmas, with the lovely Kahimi Karie coming in at the last to do a partial synching of a longer performance she has in the original audio recording. They are both well worth looking up on wikipedia. You have to like someone who names himself after the Roddy McDowell character from "Planet of the Apes"

The Fifth Dimension "Paper Cup"

It's probably one of those Jimmy Webb songs. They did "Up, Up, and Away" in the same telecast. The website indicated on the screen is not mine. You know, I think the always rather fetching Marilyn McCoo might also happen to be President Obama's real mother.

KCRA "Bluebird of Happiness" sign-off

For decades the California television station identified at the end of the clip broadcast various versions of a brief Air Force film demonstrating craft of the arsenal depending on the era, with accompanying reading of a poem famously written by an American RAF pilot entitled "High Flight"... and then this would be followed with the same strange, lovely montage film of various natural scenes, accompanied on soundtrack by the recording of a song "Bluebird of Happiness" which was dramatic enough, in tandem, to be eerie and compelling in past-midnight, darker hours coming from a television. As you'll see. It could depend on one's mood, of course, and what one was doing awake at that hour. I had this up on youtube from another poster, on here, on a short-lived "channel" of my own, and received all manner of stories and memories from people that this clip triggered. When small, I imagined that these were California's Sierra mountains and the Pacific Ocean, but have since been informed that the film was also used for sign-offs in the eastern US , so the footage could be from anywhere. I'm guessing because of the terrain and the type of fencing shown at one of the shots, then, that it's the rural eastern United States. The singer of "Bluebird..." is the late Jan Peerce.

Barenboim - Beethoven piano sonata op 2 no 1, movement 4

Daniel Barenboim, 1st LVB Piano Sonata 4th movement. It's a shame this isn't looked at as much as other musical clips on this channel. Such a nice piece. Blah blah blah. And I think it sounds a bit like Depech Mode, at times. (See, I 've mentioned Depech Mode, now, so DM fans will automatically link to this clip. Good, it'll be good for them, even though our Mr Barenboim, here, isn't clad all over in leather). Anyway - Mr. Beethoven is still a grossly misunderstood figure. Some want to attribute his isolation not to his being stone deaf and wishing to stay "on top" in the Vienna of that era, which is the most plausible explanation, but rather to other personal reasons they have no proof of. Drawing sloppy conclusions where Mr. Beethoven is concerned is a true aesthetic crime - but rather indicative of our times. If you've never read the novel (or seen the movie) entitled Immortal Beloved it offers the best explanation/theory I've seen regarding his sometimes high-handed and cross behavior, especially concerning his nephew, sister-in-law, and brother. It also clears up some mysteries about his gender-preference that are still conveniently floating around for identity-politics types to latch onto and misconstrue. There, I've said it. Look, here: there are other quite wonderful genius composers from what is widely labeled as the "classical era" who were, in fact, undeniably gay - like Tchaikovsky, for example. So please go focus on him, if that's your actual game, and let ...

Kiroro "Mirai e"

This duo from Okinawa has a certain sort of soft-rock style that one never hears in the west, anymore, in anything new, at least not in any sort of serious, mainstream manner, but that's yet another gap between what they're doing in Asia, where they don't seem to feel they can afford constant open cynicism, and what's being churned out, here. Okay? : ) She happens to be singing about "the future" or "your future" ... also about her mother, in the verses. Of course, in J-Pop they do anthems exceedingly well. Several things about the the vid grab me, not the least of which is its sincere nature. What can I say?

Chaka Khan and Rufus 1974

With Bob Hope introducing off camera! Looks as if they're in NYC's Central Park, here. The unceasingly cheerful and fiercely erotic Chaka Khan didn't, somehow, make it onto Rolling Stone magazine's top 100 pop music vocalists list. Whitney Houston did, but I guess she never gained as much weight. Rolling Stone magazine also included Bono, because Rolling Stone magazine worships Bono and would report on his excretory habits if they could - and they chose Elton John, but no Peter Gabriel or Elvis Costello on this list. Seriously, go look. Stevie Nicks and silly Steve Tyler are on the list, though. Honestly. They also put Bob Dylan ahead of Stevie Wonder. They put Mick Jagger ahead of Van Morrison. I guess Mick is more "unisexual" than Van. Critics nowadays really bray and gush over that. So, obviously Rolling Stone magazine has certain entertainment writers with their heads quite firmly up their own arseholes, or each other's. But you knew that. Their political news is still pretty cool, at least...

CHAKA KHAN RUFUS LIVE 1974 Mr eythe International

GO!GO!7188 "Kangaegoto" live

This is probably the best rock trio working, today - you have to love a band that has a great drummer like this who has named himself "Turkey" I really don't know how accurate the onscreen translation is - I didn't do it. They get off to a slightly shaky start, here, but no matter. I've posted some previous work by the guitarist and lead singer, earlier, for her side project called Chirinuruwowaka. I love this genius band, and really love these girls. : ) They've even done at least one very small tour of the United States.

Rundgren on love

"If there's a short-cut I'd have found it, but there's no easy way around it." So, here's your sermon for today. It's Todd Rundgren, who spent his very early years in and around Philadelphia, and here he is from the latter half of the 1970s with his band Utopia on the nationally syndicated Mike Douglas program - actually recorded in atv studio in Philadelphia, itself, as I've been kindly instructed by KissingWendy here on YouTube (see comments) . Although most pop-music radio listeners heard a rather different version of this song by a duo named England Dan and John Ford Coley back in 1979, Mr Rundgren wrote and recorded it, originally. I suppose this is for those of you, out there, who are "hippies" - at least in your hearts. You can hear his studio version, here, and, since Todd is known for his studio production work, it is quite recommended: www.youtube.com Todd Rundgren is one of the more famous American producer/engineers from the golden era of rock and worked in that capacity on a lot of great recordings by a wide variety of acts (like The Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way") . I guess he sings "I can't stay here, anymore" because the person in the song is in a rough place ... Mr. Rundgren is still very much around.

"Jenny Is In A Bad Mood" broadcast 198O, July 25

It's from a tape - you should just turn it up. (Watch out for that beautiful guitar solo! - she means business. Hm. Yes. It is certain.) I had this on my older channel, and I like it far too much not to reintroduce it. No, her name is not Jenny - she is Atsuko Okuno, and her stage-name is either "Iria" or "Illya" ... - I've given you a translation of the name of the song, which can also be "Jenny Is Displeased" and has been covered by several other acts in Asia. - and isn't Jenny, by the way, let's confront it, often in a bad mood, or displeased? Anyone who wants the name of this band in English will either have to give ME the feedback that I CRAVE and email me, asking for it - or you can go fish. And don't post the name, here, either, ya' PUNKS, or I shall delete that posting! : ) However, gentle reader, now that you have troubled to read this far you shall be rewarded - with a far superior recording of this performance that I've just recently come across: www.youtube.com
