EAF Electric Arc Furnace
EAF Melting scrap steel in New Zealand. The arc is about 3000°Celcius and scrap steel is melted in three charges to get around 40 tonnes of steel to be further processed in the ladle furnace. The rods are from carbon and the arc current varies between 42000 and 50000 Ampères at around 300 Volts ac. Sound is loud, wise to turn your volume down.

Footage of Redcar steelworks blast furnace which ceased production on Friday 19th February 2010 with the loss of 1600 jobs, was re-lit on 15th April 2012. The first steel rolled off the production line on 18th April. A former worker there carrying out maintenance work on the dome described it as "like hell on earth, when you looked down it was like looking into a volcano. when the orange mist came up you could'nt see your hand in front of your face, you had to be careful in case you lost your footing and plummeted into the molten metal." Teesside's steel Industry dates back to the 1850's when iron ore was discovered in the cleveland hills. There were 40 furnaces aligning the river tees producing two million tons of cast iron annually. When in the 1870's Bessemer invented a method of turning iron into steel the number of furnaces began to diminish. At it's period of greatest production the steelworks employed more than 40000 people. The steelworks were nationalised in 1967 and became the British steel corporation. Resources were concentrated into one blast furnace at Redcar which is the second largest blast furnace in Europe. The corporation became British Steel in 1988, in 1999 it merged with Dutch company Hoogevens to become Corus. Some workers took voluntary redundancy, while thousands more were made redundant over the years. The furnace was mothballed on 19th February 2010, a £320m takeover of TCP (Teesside cast products) by SSI (Sahaviriya steel industries) was signed <b>...</b>

DIY foundry crucible furnace
Making my own foundry furnace at home for melting aluminum. I came up with this design based on what i've seen others doing on You-tube, both DIY and pro guys (especially Tubalcain). I'm a firm believer that you get out what you put in. This project took about 6 weeks of part time work to do. Nothing was outsourced for fabrication. Everything was designed on the computer first. The acrylic brick moulds were made in one of the shops I regularly deal with that has a CNC. This furnace was designed around the need for single person operation and portability. I also had large reservations about casting the refractory cement (which is very expensive) in one piece. This would have also made the finished furnace body unmovable by one person. Casting bricks also allowed easer/effective/controlled construction and assembly. This also makes it very easy to dismantle and clean the unit.

The project exceeded proof of concept. The furnace helped heat a 250sq ft room and did so quite well even in intermittent sunlight. It does not replace conventional home heating. While the results were impressive, I have chosen to wait another year before rebuilding it. If you angle your box towards the sun you can increase your temp dramatically. The concern I have now is if I tilt the box I could damage my intake and exhaust tubes.

The raw materials are transferred to the stockhouse complex by ore bridges, or rail hoppers and ore transfer cars. Rail-mounted scale cars or computer controlled weight hoppers weigh out the various raw materials to yield the desired hot metal and slag chemistry. The raw materials are brought to the top of the blast furnace via a skip car powered by winches or conveyor belts.There are different ways in which the raw materials are charged into the blast furnace. Some blast furnaces use a "double bell" system where two "bells" are used to control the entry of the raw material into the blast furnace. The purpose of the two bells is to minimize the loss of hot gases in the blast furnace. First the raw materials are emptied into the upper or small bell. The bell is then rotated a predetermined amount in order to distribute the charge more accurately. The small bell then opens to empty the charge into the large bell. The small bell then closes, to seal the blast furnace, while the large bell dispenses the charge into the blast furnace.A more recent design is to use a "bell-less" system. Hate it when you have no heat and everyone wants it you to buy a new furnace or spend $400+ on work you don't need. The fix may be simple and takes just a few minutes. I my case $10.88, 5 min and 3/8" wrench. Your furnace may be different. If your pilot light does not work you may want to try re-lighting it or replacing the thermocouple. If you smell gas call a professional! This is a do at your own risk project! One guy quoted me $400 another told me I needed a $1500 replacement furnace another told me to try the thermal couple. Honeywell 36" thermocouple @ Ace Hardware $10.88 it was worth a try and worked!
