TOP 10:Helicopters - Focke-Achgelis FA223 Drache (NO.9)

'The Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 Drache ("Dragon") was a helicopter developed by Germany during World War II. Noted for being the first helicopter to attain production status, Allied offensive actions limited production and approximately only 20 were actually produced. The aircraft was powered by a 1000 horsepower radial engine (Bramo 323) which drove two, three-bladed 39 foot rotors, each mounted on twin booms on either side of the 40 foot long cylindrical fuselage. The aircraft was able to reach impressive speed, of up to 115 mph and heights of up to 23000 feet...' for more information, pls : en.wikipedia.org

Able to carry up to 12 combat troops on external benches and 4 crew inside, it could also carry up to 2.2 tons by cable externally. The Draches used in one of the Helicopter units stationed in Münster flew rescue and recover missions and could retrieve and transport whole airframes of other craft suspended below on cable. Fa 223 "Drache" tests in Hochgebirgsjagerschule at Fulpmes part 2

Two of the Fa-223s were used in maneuvers at the mountain Warfare school in the Alps near Innsbruck during September 1944. Ships V14 and V16 were utilized to supply the mountain troops. The aircraft flew 83 missions, flying on 29 of the 30 days. The one day of non operation was due to fog so thick the pilot could not see the tips of the rotors. Seventeen landings were made on sites that were 4500 feet or more above sea level, including three on the Dresdener Hutte, at an elevation of 7600 feet. The extensive maneuvers demonstrated the helicopter had a place in mountain warfare. The Fa-223 could lift 1100 pounds of provisions to a remote site at an elevation of 6500 feet in just seven minutes, a feat that would require twenty men, a day and half of strenuous climbing, to accomplish. in one fifteen minute round trip flight from the base at Mittenwald, a mountain howitzer and its ammunition were lifted on a cable below the helicopter, then flown to, and safely lowered to a position just below the Wornergrat peak. The gun had to be winch lowered, because there was not enough room to land. The Fa-223 was used as a troop transport during maneuvers and carried as many as 12 troops in addition to the pilot. Four men were carried inside the cabin and eight were carried on tractor seats fastened to the outriggers. When the mountain maneuvers ended on October 5,1944, the head of the Mountain Warfare School enthusiastically endorsed the Fa-223 and everyone expected that there would ...

German Helicopter Air-Mech: WW2 Style!

So far, nearly every modern military idea has a German WW2 antecedant. www.combatreform.org Meaning usually the Germans--not Americans--thought of it first. The M113 Gavin fully enclosed, air-transportable, amphibious, tracked APC was truly an American first. The fixed-wing airplane by the Wright Brothers was an USA first. "First" is certainly not the province of the moronic USMC who brag that they don't think and whine that they don't have money when Congress pours billions into their Oprah Winfrey-style victim racket. They copied shallow-draft landing craft from the Japanese. Civilian Donald Roebeling came up with the open-top, amphibious tractor (AMTRACK). So much for gyrene innovation. A Polish Lieutenant created the first military VTOL helicopter for static observation in WW1. The Germans were the first to field moving combat VTOL helicopters, followed by the US Army in WW2. The USMC didn't even get involved until their packing gyrenes-in-vulnerable-surface-ships racket got threatened after folks began putting 2+2 after pondering the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan in WW2 and later nuclear bomb tests against clusterfucks of surface ships. And even then it was the US Army to develop a coherent air mobility force structure using helicopter troop ships, gunships and scout aircraft with the 11th Air Assault Testbed Division in the 1960s. The US Army had to create the helicopter gunship and escort marine "slick" troop transports in Vietnam so they wouldn't get shot up in ...

Mil V-12/Mi-12 NATO Code: Homer

The Soviet made Mil V-12 (Also referred to as the Mi-12, NATO reporting name "Homer") is the largest helicopter ever built. The name "Mi-12" would have been the name for the production helicopter. Since the V-12 never went into production and only two prototypes were built, the name "Mi-12" was never adopted. The V-12 features the only two-rotor transverse scheme ever built by Mil eliminating the need for a tail rotor. The twin engines were taken together with the rotors from the Mil Mi-6 and duplicated on the V-12. Being the first time used by Mil, the twin rotos transvers scheme was not new. It was first seen in the Focke-Wulf Fw 61 the first fully controlable helicopter from 1936. Later other helicopter used the scheme such as the Focke Achgelis Fa 223 Drache from 1940. The Soviet Kamov OKB built an experimental aircraft with the same scheme in 1958, Kamov Ka-22 Vintokryl . This aircraft had also the combined wing/rotor arrangement later used on the Mil V-12.

Fieseler Fi 156 Storch demo 1938

In 1935, the RLM (Reichsluftfahrtministerium, Reich Aviation Ministry) put out a tender for a new Luftwaffe aircraft (suitable for liaison, army co-operation today called Forward Air Control), and medical evacuation, as required to several companies. Penned by chief designer Reinhold Mews and technical director Erich Bachen, Fieseler's entry was the most advanced in terms of STOL performance, by far. A fixed slat ran along the entire leading edge of the long wings, while the trailing edge, inspired by earlier 1930s Junkers aircraft wing control surface designs, including the ailerons, was a hinged and slotted flap. The wings could be folded back along the fuselage, allowing it to be carried on a trailer or even towed slowly behind a vehicle. The long legs of the landing gear contained oil and spring shock absorbers that compressed about 450 mm (18 inches) on landing, allowing the plane to set down almost anywhere. In flight they hung down, giving the aircraft the appearance of a very long-legged, big-winged bird, Hence its nickname, Storch. With its very low landing speed the Storch often landed "at place" or even backwards, in case of wind from directly ahead. The first Fi 156 V1 prototype flew in the spring of 1936. It was powered by a 180 kW (240 hp) inverted-vee Argus As 10C V8 engine, which gave the plane a top speed of only 175 km/h (109 mph), enabling the Storch to fly as slow as 50 km/h (32 mph), take off into a light wind in less than 45 m (150 ft), and land in ...
