Haas & Hahn is the working name of Dutch artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn. After receiving international acclaim for Favela Painting, their current project in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, they are preparing to embark on a wild journey to bring their outrageous works of art to other unexpected places around the world. Drawing inspiration from various aspect of modern city life and observing the growing effects of urbanization, they aim to 'flip' common reality inside out, incorporating various artistic media to question the public perception. In 2006 they realized a large video installation in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, which was later shown during a cultural festival in Maratea, Italy. In Amsterdam, they exhibited various artworks, which were auctioned by Christies to raise funds for the realization of their 'Favela Painting' project. Their work was also shown at the 2008 Shenzhen-Hong Kong Architecture Biennale and has been part of various group exhibits. Their documentary about the lives of young rappers in the Brazilian slums has been broadcast on Dutch and Brazilian television and is still successfully shown at international film and culture festivals. Brazilian Police have raided several favelas (slums) following days of intense violence in the streets of Rio de Janeiro. The police are blaming the violence on drug gangs. More than 25 people have been killed including innocent bystanders, as rival gangs are working together to fight the police. Asia Times Correspondent Pepe Escobar says this has been the key problem in Brazil, it was considered a "no man's land" that the government forgot about because the drug cartel's overran the local area.

On May 18-20 2011, the Brazilian human rights network 'Plataforma Dhesca Brasil' organized a 3-day mission in Rio de Janeiro to investigate the impacts of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics on communities facing forced eviction from their homes and lands. These are the Voices of the Mission. In this video, we visit Favela do Metrô, a community facing forced removal to make room for a parking lot for the stadium that will host the closing match of the 2014 World Cup (Maracanã stadium). Raquel Rolnik, UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing, was a special guest of the mission on this day. Brazil is the leading economic power in South America, yet it still has serious crime as well as a large disparity between rich and poor. Many poor Brazilians live in shanty towns -- called favelas -- that surround the cities. Favelas - characterized by poorly constructed buildings and inadequate infrastructure - are often the center of criminal activity. These shanty neighborhoods date from the 1920s, but their populations are still growing. Brazilian authorities have made tackling crime and poverty in the favelas a priority. Steve Mort has the story from Sao Paulo.

AfroReggae uses arts and culture as a weapon against the violence created by drugs and weapons trafficking and the police violence in Brazil. Trafficking offers at least four times the salary of the few other work opportunities and is often the only option for many kids living inside these communities. Working with youth in the favelas (slums) to provide alternative activities and education has created opportunities outside of the trafficking, and allows many to dream of a better future. The work in Minais Gerais with the police is also an important, and hopefully growing project for AfroReggae as it breaks down the violent and often deadly barriers between the police force and the favela residents. Along with the newspaper, tv shows, work in the youth prisons, and many other projects AfroReggae is creating a dialogue with the rest of the popluation to raise awareness and create understanding between all races and social classes in Brazil.

Rocinha (literally, Portuguese for small ranch) is the largest favela in Brazil. It is located within the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, between the districts of São Conrado and Gávea. It is built on a steep hillside overlooking the city, just one kilometre from the beach. three neighborhood associations and numerous NGOs and non-profit educational institutions. Many celebrities have visited Rocinha, including Mikhail Gorbachev (during the Earth Summit of 1992), Michael Jackson and actor Christopher Lambert. Robert Neuwirth discusses Rocinha in his book entitled Shadow Cities.

Maestrina da Favela documents a girl and her mission to liberate children from a life of drugs, violence and poverty. Filmed in a slum in Brazil's capital of happiness, Salvador, Bahia, with sounds from Africa a teenage girl beats empowerment into youth through drums. At the tender age of eight, Elen created a band infused with Samba, Swing, Reggae and African rhythms for the children of drug abused parents in her slum. From the former slave market town square of Pelourinho, Elen now 15 years old, has emerged from the Rocinha slum into a well respected musician and community leader for children all over Salvador. She moves beyond music and teaches children how to read and write during her spare time.
