Recorded live at the Zurich Opera House in October 2008. Translucence, transparency warmth are the qualities identified by Bernard Haitink as necessary for an ideal sound performance of Beethovens only opera, and all are present in this fantastic recording of Katharina Thalbachs new production for Opernhaus Zurich. Haitink conducts the Zurich Opera Orchestra in a magnificent performance in which Leonore Overture No. 3 provides an interlude between the two scenes of the second act, following a tradition started by Gustav Mahler. German soprano Melanie Diener, in the role of Leonore, leads a brilliant cast including Alfred Muff as Rocco, Roberto Saccà as Florestan, Sandra Trattnigg as Marzelline and Christoph Strehl as Jaquino. This High Definition recording with true surround sound marks the start of an exciting new collaboration between Opus Arte and Opernhaus Zurich. Georgi Nelepp Florestan - Beethoven (Fidelio) 1957 First Soviet recording of Fidelio, based on historic Russian premier of Beethoven's opera. Georgi Nelepp appeared in the first Soviet performance of Fidelio, with the young and gorgeous Vishnevksaya. Said to be guilty of political betrayal by his fellow colleagues, Nelepp has stood accused of harming other artists through his party alliances. Vishnevskaya witnessed a chilling confrontation between an old woman and Nelepp in front of other Bolshoi artists in which she accused Nelepp of destroying her family. Fidelio: devotion, defiance, disguise
A husband falsely imprisoned. A wife desperate to save him. Beethoven's Fidelio, the composer's only opera, will be performed by Opera North in Leeds, Nottingham, Gateshead and Salford throughout Spring 2011. A passion for liberty and justice and a belief in the human spirit's ability to triumph over suffering is central to Beethoven's celebrated and only opera. The opera took Beethoven ten years to write and has not been seen in Leeds for 20 years. Internationally acclaimed soprano Emma Bell sings the role of Leonore, Florestan's wife, who disguises herself as a young prison guard named Fidelio in order to free her husband from jail. Her Florestan is American tenor Steven Harrison. The supporting cast features young talent, including Fflur Wyn singing the role of Marzelline and Joshua Ellicot as Jacquino. Tim Albery makes a welcome return to direct this production that originates from Scottish Opera. The acclaimed conductor, Sir Richard Armstrong conducts.
