Fife Coastal railway ((Part 3)) Methil Leven To St andrews SQ2009 Cameron Brig

In 1854 the Leven Railway opened, linking the town with Thornton Junction on the Edinburgh - Aberdeen main line. This helped it to become a tourist resort popular with visitors from the west of Scotland, and particularly Glasgow. Later in the 19th century the Leven Railway became part of a loop line of the North British Railway linking Thornton Junction and Leuchars Junction via St Andrews. The railway between Leven and St Andrews closed in 1964/65. The railway between Leven and Thornton Junction closed to freight in 1966 and passengers in 1969. A project into the reopening of the line is under consideration. See Leven rail link.en.wikipedia.org

African-American Fife & Drum Music: Mississippi & Jamaica

This is archival (?which) footage of a fife and drum group of Ed and Lonnie Young of Mississippi. I believe it was recorded by Alan Lomax, sometime between 1959 and the early 60s. They use a fife made of cane, and drums adapted from military bands. It is interesting how similar it is, not just in form but also in actual content, to the fife and drum playing of "John Canoe" processional music of Jamaica. I have put just a quick sample of that from a 1954 recording, at the end. [My purpose for posting is to draw out this comparison, which would probably not be noticed otherwise (the clip being buried in Martin Scorcese's documentary on Blues), but if it appears to infringe someone's copyright, please contact me.]

Napoleonic Fife and Drum Tunes

At the END of a day's worth of practice we decided to record ourselves. Please bear in mind that we are both novices, i have been playing the fife for 6 months (2months with my new fife) and the drummer has 2 months experience. We both have no teachers so we rely on ourselves for the most part. This is the 4th time we played together and half of the songs shown here we had played together for the first time that day. Anyway, hopefully it'll be somewhat enjoyable ;) Leeve de Koning en het 7de!

1 of 4. Tom Fife. Interview. In 1992 the Russians told Tom about Barack Obama as President.

Interview (03.10.2009) with Tom Fife regarding an essay that he wrote (dated 11.20.2008) entitled, "The First Time I Heard Of Barack." Tom Fife, an American, was in Russia in 1992. He was in the process of starting a software development joint-venture company with some people from the Russian scientific community. The Soviet Russian Communists told Tom that the United States would, in the future, elect a black man as President and that his name is Barack. Tom was told that Barack is a communist. Tom was told that Barack was born of a white mother and African father. Tom was told that Barack was born in Hawaii, although the Russian ( a woman) was hesitant and noticeably unsure of herself when she mentioned the Hawaiian birth. The radio interview (03.10.2009) with Tom Fife was conducted by Jeff Rense. Link to Tom Fife's 11.20.2008 essay: www.scribd.com

Homemade fife

A short clip of me playing a couple of old Redcoat tunes on a homemade fife made out of a 15mm (12mm int dia) copper radiator pipe. It's roughly in the traditional British/American fife key of Bb (roughly). The tuning is still not right but i wanted to record it before i do too many more adjustments and potentially ruin it. It's a proto-type to a future project of making a replica Redcoat fife of the American revolution. Which will be a slightly larger bore, made from brass and chrome plated; perhaps even a nickel silver lip plate! The tunes are 'British Grenadier' and Brighton Camp March (Girl i left behind me)

Fife and drum at Fort Napoleon #2 - Brighton Camp/The Girl I Left Behind Me

A popular folksong that is also a famous march, played usually when e company/regiment/... left or returned to barracks, encampment, hometown, ... The following are lyrics dating back to circa 1790. There are however different versions that have been sung throughout the history of the song. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm lonesome since I crossed the hill, And o'er the moor and valley. Such grievous thoughts my heart do fill, Since parting with my Sally. I seek no more the fine nor gay, For each does but remind me, How swift the hours did pass away, With the girl I left behind me. Oh, ne'er shall I forget the night, The stars were bright above me, And gently lent their silvery light, When first she vowed to love me. But now I'm bound for Brighton Camp, Kind Heaven, then, pray guide me, And send me safely back again, To the girl I left behind me.
