They're not playmakers or finesse artists and they don't dish out assists. If the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 is Dick Butkus snuffing out a Jim Brown thrust up the middle, then the 2010 Hennessey Performance Engineering Chevy Camaro SS HPE550 is Lawrence Taylor with radar lock on Joe Theismann's right leg. And it's not just that they're powerful and merciless, but intentionally provocative and intimidating, too. On looks alone, either of these cars is enough to make the drivers of other machines cower like a three-legged Labradoodle. They are, of course, muscle cars in the rawest, most vicious sense of the term. And they're quicker, faster, meaner and flat nastier than anything built back when Ol' Shel and Don Yenko were just guys. And not by a little bit either. But which is the better beast? To find out, we drove these two all-Americans on the street, at our test track and on the Dynojet chassis dyno at MD Automotive in Westminster, California. Then we did some big smoky burnouts just to piss off the Sierra Club. By the time we were through, Greenpeace had threatened to blockade the Inside Line garage and the Obama administration was seriously considering a unilateral deployment of the fun police. Didn't matter. By then the tires were shot and we had our winner.

High-res photos: www.worldcarfans.com The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 facelift is here and will be on display at the Ford stand at the Los Angeles auto show starting tomorrow. Under the hood is a supercharged 5.8 liter aluminum-block V8 that produces 650 hp (485 kW / 659 PS) and 600 lb-ft (813 Nm) of torque. That engine unit is coupled to an upgraded six-speed manual gearbox. For the aerodynamics, the front fascia and splitters have been modified to handle the loads required of the car's top speed of 200 mph (322 km/h). The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 comes fitted with 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inchers at the back wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G:2 tires. Both a Performance Package and a Track Package are on offer with the Shelby GT500. The Performance Package includes Bilstein electronically-adjusted dampers while the Track Package features an external engine-oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler to prevent over-heating on the track.

Fords Special Vehicle Team (SVT) engineers are taking high performance to a new level with the 2011 Ford Shelby GT500, resulting in a car that has an all-new aluminum-block engine, even better driving dynamics and handling, improved fuel economy and more horsepower than ever. The 2011 Shelby GT500 is powered by an all-new aluminum-block 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine, which produces 550 horsepower and 510 ft.-lb. of torque, a 10 horsepower increase versus the 2010 model. The engine also is 102 pounds lighter than its predecessor, delivering a better power-to-weight ratio, improved fuel economy, acceleration, handling and steering precision.

FOR MORE DETROIT AUTO SHOW COVERAGE: www.edmunds.com Like the new Ford Mustang GT and V6 models introduced at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2010 Shelby GT500 to be introduced at the Detroit auto show in January is far from an all-new car. Like its more pedestrian brethren, the GT500 gets a revised look, a vastly improved interior and a bump in horsepower for the 2010 model year. The car goes on sale in early spring 2009. Unlike the meager 15-hp injection given to the GT, the GT500 gets 40 horses more for a grand total of 540. And no, Ford will not change this car's name to GT540. The 2010 model uses the same, basic supercharged 5.4-liter V8, but it's tuned more like the limited-edition GT500 KR. A new cold-air intake draws air from the upper front grille through its own snorkel, and this piece helps generate the increased power. It's so important that the Cobra emblem on the grille has been moved to the passenger side so as not to block the intake. Along with the 540 hp at 6200 rpm, the reworked motor now makes 510 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm (a 30 lb-ft increase). The GT500's increased accelerative thrust will be aided by a new 3.55:1 rear end, in place of last year's 3.31. Even so, Ford says that the 2010 model will get a 10 percent improvement in highway fuel economy thanks to taller 5th and 6th gear ratios in its six-speed manual transmission. Figure it should return about 22 mpg highway. In truth, the last thing the GT500 really needs is more power; what <b>...</b>

For the price, there are many foreign imports offering superior handling and better 0-60 scores, many with the added benefits of practicality and versatility. There are also more expensive competitors with added power and performance. But what they don't offer is the Shelby name and Mustang heritage, which to some buyers, means unconditional love, whatever the price may be.

Not two months after unveiling the restyled 2010 Mustang, Ford pulled the wraps off the latest version of its Shelby GT500 super-'Stang. As if the previous version's 500 horsepower wasn't enough, these new GT500 coupes and convertibles pack a projected 540 pavement-ripping ponies from their supercharged and intercooled 5.4-liter V8, while delivering about two more miles per gallon on the highway. Peak torque has increased from 480 to 510 lb.-ft. and the rear-axle's standard ratio increased from 3.31:1 to 3.55:1, promising truly scary acceleration. Outside, the reworked heetmetal is augmented with a new functional extractor to vent under-hood heat and a "Gurney Flap" rear spoiler. Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) says it used the 40th anniversary Shelby GT500KR "King of the Road" Mustangs as its performance starting point and built from there.
