Each year, the Christmas concert presented by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square is seen by more than 85000 people live and by millions more via television broadcast. It is a full-scale production featuring world-class musicians, soloists, dancers, narrators, and music that leaves viewers in awe year after year. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has recorded nearly 200 albums over the past 100 years, with five gold records, two platinum records, and a Grammy. The latest recording, Glad Christmas Tidings, marks the 40th project to come out on the Choir's independently-owned recording label. This year, the Choir was joined by pop music sensation and platinum recording artist David Archuleta. David's clear and powerful vocals paired with the Choir's classic Christmas sound makes this album a must-have for any Christmas collection. The 12-track album includes live recordings from the Choir's 2010 Christmas concert from Temple Square, a dream come true for Archuleta, who was raised listening to the Choir from a very young age. Archuleta is the youngest performer ever to headline the holiday concert. He joins a long list of award-winning performers to take the stage with the Choir at Christmas, such as Natalie Cole, Angela Lansbury, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald and Bryn Terfel. FOX6: Birmingham Filmmaker Goes to Cannes
Birmingham-based film director and screenwriter Yuri Shapochka appeared at the FOX6 Studio in the "Good Day" show with Rick Journey to talk about his experience at Cannes. Recently, he showcased two of his short films, "High Expectations" and "Waiting," at the Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival. Both films were shot and produced in Birmingham. Mr. Shapochka was accompanied at the festival by his writing partner Marina Bolshinskaya and actress Natasha Reshetnikova, who starred in the HBO film "Rasputin" with Alan Rickman. The Cannes Film Festival, founded in 1939, is considered to be the premier event for showcasing new talent and debuting significant film work. While at the festival, Mr. Shapochka networked with a number of international production and distribution companies and TV channels and took the opportunity to promote Birmingham as a city that supports independent filmmaking. Written and directed by Yuri, a dark comedy "High Expectations," won the Platinum Remi Award in "Directing Shorts" at the 40th WorldFest Film Festival and the "Best Dark Comedy" award at the New York International Independent Film Festival. King attended Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania. King played in the National League from 1954 through 1957 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He finished his career with a 7-5 record and appeared in 95 games, all but four in relief. He was originally signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1946, however he was traded to the Pirates in 1948 in an unknown transaction. After selling municipal bonds following his retirement from baseball, King moved into sports broadcasting in 1959 for radio stations in Greensburg and Latrobe, both small cities outside of Pittsburgh. He was hired as the third member of the Pirates broadcasting team for the 1967 season, joining Bob Prince and Jim Woods. He replaced Don Hoak who had moved back onto the field as a major league coach. Woods left the Pirates after the 1969 season and was replaced by Gene Osborn. When Osborn was fired after one year, the Pirates went with a two-man team, Prince and King. The first Bellin 10K was held on June 12, 1977 and was known as the Bellin Heartwarming Run designed to promote cardiovascular fitness and wellness. The run was intended to be a one-time event to help celebrate the dedication of the hospital's newly constructed additions. The run drew 881 participants. The following January, Bellin began receiving calls about when the next running event would be scheduled. Bellin officials decided to hold a second run, titled the Bellin 10K Run, to see if it would be as successful as the first. More than 1100 runners participated in the second run and a new tradition was born. Over the years the event has grown in stature and overall participation. By 2009, the Bellin Run was among the top 10 largest timed 10K races in the nation. In 2010, a record 18398 people registered for the event. The course is United States Track and Field certified and the run is sanctioned by the Athletics Congress. Fox 6 only signed off in 2002 and 2004 for transimitter maintenance, however it never signs off for the night everyday. It signed off in the early to mid 90's every night. There are some funny surprises when fox 6 signed off for the night. One of the things it shows is an old news banner story on the upper right hand side of the screen from earlier in the year that said "Beer Vs. Books."
