Freud 150th Anniversary

Although the arguements advanced by these scientists tends to supplement the neurological approach to subjectivity, it might do well to recall Lacan's views on neurology. During a talk he gave to MIT in the 1970s, Lacan was asked a question by Noam Chomsky on thought. In his reply, Lacan stated that he had seen enough EEG readings to know that there was not a single thought in the brain (Rudinesco, 1997). These comments, which scandalized Lacan's audience, may be interpreted as an allusion to the overwriting of the real by the symbolic. Science takes the real as its object of study without attending to the veiling of the object by its representation. EEG readings, for example, are representations, and for Lacan the representation, as in speech, is all that exists. The meaning of that which it refers to is invariably constructed within a chain of signifiers from which it is possible to hypostatize a concept only when the principle of metaphoricity at work in its meaning is obfuscated. Such obfuscation is part of the 'paranoic refusal of recognition' (Lacan, 1953: p. 93), the stabilization of the barred subject, in which communication, in this case that of science, 'always subjectively includes its own reply' (ibid: p. 93).

The Biography of Sigmund Freud (Part 1 of 5)

www.luxstock.net Sigmund Freud (IPA [ˈziːkmʊnt ˈfʁɔʏt]), born Sigismund Schlomo Freud (6 May 1856 23 September 1939), was an Austrian psychiatrist who founded the psychoanalytic school of psychology.[1] Freud is best known for his theories of the unconscious mind and the defense mechanism of repression and for creating the clinical practice of psychoanalysis for curing psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. Freud is also renowned for his redefinition of sexual desire as the primary motivational energy of human life, as well as his therapeutic techniques, including the use of free association, his theory of transference in the therapeutic relationship, and the interpretation of dreams as sources of insight into unconscious desires. He was also an early neurological researcher into cerebral palsy. While of significant historical interest, many of Freud's ideas have fallen out of favor or have been modified by Neo-Freudians, although in the past ten years, advances in the field of neurology have shown evidence for many of his theories. Freud's methods and ideas remain important in clinical psychodynamic approaches. In academia his ideas continue to influence the humanities and some social sciences.

Freud (Part 1 of 14)

MAY 21 2011 IS JUDGEMENT DAY! "Alone he fought against his own dark passions...against the taboos of an outraged world...knowing that the shocking truth could ruin his career...destroy his marriage!" (From movie poster) This is a fascinating film and Monty gives an excellent performance as Dr. Freud. I'm quite a fan of this movie! There is much to be appreciated, from the amazing cinematic style with it's perfectly framed scenes, to the story itself which unfolds like a mystery. I particulary enjoy the clues that have been sprinkled throughout the movie. Some are more obvious than others and on Part 14 of 14 I've listed some of the more curious ones that I noticed (If there are any other Freud fans, please offer additional clues that are not overt, I'd love to discuss.) Starring Montgomery Clift, Susannah York, and Larry Parks. Directed by John Hutson. (1962) NY Times Critics Choice.

Sigmund Freud's Voice (BBC Broadcast Recording 1938)

Another historic voice recording. The Austrian psychiatrist who founded the psychoanalytic school of psychology, Sigmund Freud (May 6, 1856 - September 23, 1939) tells about his achievements. This was recorded as his home recording, and later broadcasted as a part of the BBC broadcast "Celebrities on Radio", which was broadcasted on December 27th, 1938. Freud was very ill at this time - he was suffering from throat cancer. Because of this, he talks very slowly in a very indistinct accent. Freud died nine month later after this broadcast. Freud Says; I started my professional activity as a neurologist trying to bring relief to my neurotic patients. Under the influence of an older friend and by my own efforts, I discovered some important and new facts about the unconscious in psychic life, the role of instinctual urges and so on. Out of these findings grew a new science, Psycho-Analysis, a part of psychology and a new method of treatment of the neuroses. I had to pay heavily for this bit of good luck. People did not believe in my facts and thought my theories unsavoury. Resistance was strong and unrelenting. In the end I suceeded in acquiring pupils and building up an International Psycho-Analytic Association. But this struggle is not yet over. Sigmund Freud.

Freud's Id, Ego, and Superego

Psychologist Sigmund Freud demonstrates what a boy will think in his conscious and unconscious when he sees a girl...on the beach. In a fantastically fun and educational way, the psychology legend explains and defines his terms, Id, Ego, and Superego. This is the corrected version of a video uploaded in April 2008, with 35600 views where the roles were misrepresented.
