Kevin Maurice Garnett (born May 19, 1976) is an American professional basketball player who currently plays power forward for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). After a high school basketball career at Farragut Career Academy which included winning a national player of the year award,[1] he skipped college and entered the NBA Draft. He was selected with the 5th overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves and became the first NBA player drafted directly out of high school in 20 years. Garnett made an immediate impact with the Minnesota Timberwolves leading them to eight-consecutive playoff appearances. In 2004, Garnett led the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals and was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2003--04 season. In the 2000 Summer Olympics, he won a gold medal as a member of the USA men's national basketball team. Since his second season in the league, Garnett has been named to every All-Star Game, which includes winning the All-Star MVP award in 2003. He was awarded the regular season's NBA Defensive Player of the Year in the 2007--08 season and has been a nine-time member of the All-NBA Teams selection and a eleven-time member of the All-Defensive Teams selection.[2] Garnett currently holds several all-time Timberwolves franchise records. He's the originator of a tradition that is now often called "The Garnett," and is copied by other players. Most KG fans know this story well, and understand its place in the life of Kevin Garnett. It's hard to believe that it has been 10 years. KG had just turned 24 on May 19, 2000. Early on May 20th, Sealy was returning home from attending KG's birthday party... This feature aired yesterday during halftime of Game 4 of the Celtics-Cavaliers series on ABC. However, the interview here was actually done in 2008, not long after KG won the championship. Most of this piece and footage is derived from the Kevin Garnett "KG" DVD. ABC just refurbished and re-edited it because we are approaching the 10 year mark of Malik Sealy's tragic card accident and death. Interesting that ABC decided to air this more than a week earlier -- probably in the event that the Celtics don't make it past the semifinals.
