Why Should China Go Green? - Gary Hirshberg

Complete video at: fora.tv Gary Hirshberg, CE-Yo of Stonyfield Farm, discusses agricultural conditions in China. He considers the country to be a leading candidate for organic farm production. ----- Organic foods currently make up less than one percent of the food consumed in China. Meanwhile, China's environmental challenges are growing -- as carbon levels in the atmosphere increase, droughts threaten, food prices rise and international pressure to find an answer to global climate change grows. But organic agriculture offers a solution, a way to conserve water and capture carbon from the atmosphere, while increasing yields and lowering prices. Gary Hirshberg (CEO, Stonyfield Farm), Beth Keck (Sr. Director, International Sustainability, Wal-Mart) and Orville Schell (Director, Asia Society Center on US-China Relations) discuss if China is ready for a change in the way it produces its food. What effect would an organic China have on world markets and the world's climate? - Asia Society Gary Hirshberg is the president and CE-Yo of Stonyfield Farm, the world's largest manufacturer of organic yogurt. Hirshberg has overseen the company's growth from infancy as a 7-cow organic farming school in 1983 to its current $200 million in annual sales. This growth has been built with innovative marketing techniques that often combine the social, environmental, and financial missions of the company.

Food, Inc.Movie Now Leaked. Watch it here

ixailii.notlong.com The current method of raw food production is largely a response to the growth of the fast food industry since the 1950s. The production of food overall has more drastically changed since that time than the several thousand years prior. Controlled primarily by a handful of multinational corporations, the global food production business - with an emphasis on the business - has as its unwritten goals production of large quantities of food at low direct inputs (most often subsidized) resulting in enormous profits, which in turn results in greater control of the global supply of food sources within these few companies. Health and safety (of the food itself, of the animals produced themselves, of the workers on the assembly lines, and of the consumers actually eating the food) are often overlooked by the companies, and are often overlooked by government in an effort to provide cheap food regardless of these negative consequences. Many of the changes are based on advancements in science and technology, but often have negative side effects. The answer that the companies have come up with is to throw more science at the problems to bandage the issues but not the root causes. The global food supply may be in crisis with lack of biodiversity, but can be changed on the demand side of the equation. "PRICELE$$" Post-Film Discussion w/Filmmaker and Guest Panel

Post film Q&A with (lr) Former Congressman Paul Hodes (D, NH, 2008-2010), filmmaker Steve Cowan of Habitat Media, Senator Larry Pressler (R, South Dakota, 1979-1997), and Stonyfield Organics CE-Yo Gary Hirshberg. Moderator: Dan Weeks of Americans for Campaign Reform. Synopsis of PRICELE$$: The cost of running for public office in America has grown so large that only a tiny sliver of Americans can donate anything significant, let alone run for office themselves. Politicians must go to large donors such as the oil & gas industry, agrichemical companies, health insurers, and Wall Street, the type of companies they're supposed to be regulating. Likened by one seasoned Senator to the ancient art of whoring, America's electoral system forces elected representatives, in both parties, to rely on special interests for their job security. PRICELE$$ is a one-hour documentary with a colorful cast of characters who will inform, move, and amuse. You'll be privy to personal accounts of lives upended and hear how postal rates cause global warming. You'll learn the definition of "running clean" and discover the fate of two politicians who actually enjoyed fundraising. With all the challenges facing our nation today, now is the time for answers. Food, Inc. Trailer

About the Film --- How much do we really know about the food we buy at our local supermarkets and serve to our families? In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that's been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, insecticide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of e coli--the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults. Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield Farm's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising -- and often shocking truths -- about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here. Homesteading (28): Fast food companies and agroconglomerates

This video is in part a response to stephenhayes' recent experience selling his traditional variety English apples at a British farmer's market which is closing down next year. I have been strongly influenced in my thinking about the food we eat by Eric Schlosser's 'Fast Food Nation', a book which shockingly exposes: the power and influence of America's fast food companies and agro-conglomerates on the nation's eating habits, the appalling conditions of employees in the food industry, and how current industrial-style food production (eg feed lots for cattle) is wreaking havoc on America's natural environment. I am also a huge fan of Morgan Spurlock's 'Supersize Me', a documentary that illustrates the impact fast food can have on our health, as well as highlighting how the massive advertising budgets of fast food companies are specifically targeted at children to ensure they remain cradle-to-grave consumers of their products.
