Two Union Pacific Geeps deliver a covered hopper at Ames, Iowa

In between the third and forth trains of "Southern Pacific Day" (www.youtube.com the Ames local appeared to deliver a covered hopper to Skei Coal and Salt. The local is seen here arriving at the switch, backing down to Skei Coal, coming back onto the main, and finally leaving for points east. Both engines are GP15ACs. The train seen at 3:16 is the end of Train 3 from "Southern Pacific Day." At 5:08, Dispatcher 19 is heard talking to what I think is the local. He then starts talking to 5965, the lead engine of the train seen at 3:16. Filmed on January 30, 2012 at Ames, Iowa. Engines: UPY 740 UPY 725

Santa Fe Geeps (BNSF)

A pair of Santa Fe Geeps: GP30 & GP35. I caught them on my way home from the MR club, and decided to drive ahead to a grade crossing to hear the horn. Apparently, this train was switching out some cars with the entire train, so it ended up taking over an hour just to get the units at a crossing. (just 1/2 mile from the first sighting.) The train stops at the crossing, then backs up to clear the crossing. I wish I could tell you why.

Street Running: Alcos vs Geeps part 2

Check it out, a pedestrian races the Norfolk Southern train for several blocks, then crosses in front of it as the pair of GP 38-2s street run Chemung Street in Painted Post, NY on a cold October day, pulling a string of tank cars dropped off by the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Alcos. Not sure what was worth risking life and limb for on the other side, considering each geep weighs 125 tons, not to mention what the rest of the train must weigh! Alco Century 424s from the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville then start their return trip, announcing their departure as impressively as their arrival, leaving a trail of diesel smoke and fumes in their wake! Awesome stuff! Corning/Painted Post at one time were quite the railroad towns, hosting three major railroads: the NYC, the Erie, and the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western. Sadly, most of the tracks in town have long since been torn up. Chemung St and Centerway are all that's left for those of us obsessed with observing these brutes close up!

SPS GEEPS AND CADILLACS - Now Available on DVD!

SPS GEEPS AND CADILLACS Vintage Workhorses Enjoy the sights and sounds of 40-year old GP9, SD7, and SD9 diesel locomotives moving freight over Southern Pacific's Central California mainlines and branchlines in the 1990s. Nicknamed "Geeps" and "Cadillacs," these engines revolutionized American railroading when they were introduced by EMD in the 1950s. Their popularity among the railroads was due to their efficiency, ease of maintenance, and operational flexibility. However, old age and hard work caught up to the engines during the 1970s and 1980s, and the majority of them were retired by almost all Class 1 railroads. Incredibly, Southern Pacific was still relying on the venerable workhorses in the spring of 1994 when Pentrex captured them on video. You'll visit SP's Fresno Line between Bakersfield and Sacramento to view the endangered diesels in action. Watch from trackside as solid sets of Geeps and Cadillacs work hard along the mainline on the Roseville-to-Fresno Local, and catch the Lodi Local as it travels over the Ione Branch out of Galt. Then ride in the cab of Geep #3742 for a thrilling return trip downgrade to the mainline at Galt. This is a fantastic opportunity to witness classic SP diesel locomotives in operation!

Geep, not sure which model, leading a local through town.

I'm not sure which model of Geep this is. Telling them apart has always been a bit rough for me. =p Anyways ... The video is kinda' rough because we barely caught this train. I never thought I'd see my loving spouse run to see anything but horses! lol The track this train is running on isn't that high quality. At least, not for the United States. I imagine it is primarily an industrial track. :-) So the trains move pretty slow through here. ^_^ Hopefully, the sounds of the crossing gates isn't "copyrighted." XD

Cabooses, SD40-2s Geeps, SD60s, Amtrak Mo-Pac, NS and more! Night time parade in Winona MN!

What a night in Winona! this was from back in december when I took a trip to Winona MN with Amazing results. The trains featured in this video were taken from 7 PM to 10. train 1 - The CP day Job - G80 - heads east towards Tower CK with a lengthy local and a caboose in tow train 2 - the Only train which runs daily on the UP Winona Sub and I was lucky enough to catch it! Best part about this train - it runs with a Mo-Pac Bay window caboose. With a SP GP60 on the point, this was one hell of a train!! Train 3 - Hitting tower CK in run 8, DM&E 277 heads west. When the crew of G80 told me that 277 was on approach, I couldn't have been happier, knowing that that train always has a nice array of power. With a grey CITX unit leading, the CITX "disco" unit 2nd out, and a DM&E SD40-3 trailing, this train made for a nice sight. Train 4 - After being told that the line was clear for eastbound Empire builder Amtrak number 7 - I was shocked to see a pair of Westbound manifests head through Winona, racing to Minnesota City to take the siding. This train has some weird power as well, with a CP SD40-2 on the point of a pair of NS units! Train 5 - right on the tail of the last train, a pair of SOO SD60's lead this train towards Minnesota City. Train 6 - The eastbound empire builder Amtrak number 7 makes its scheduled station stop about an hour and half behind its scheduled 8:30 stop.

Dauphin St CSX (Geep And MAC AGAIN!!!)

Funny how I seem to run into these two often... Well 6046 and 4815 are at it again. This time, they appear to be doing a small local run. Dauphin St is on the right side of the Mobile Convention Center and the tracks actually run underneath the building like a tunnel. On the other side is a pedestrian crossing. Like all the crossings after Madison St going into downtown mobile, the crossings become quiet zones due to nearby hotels. Here's some facts about this particular crossing. This is the last crossing before the railyard and this crossing gets activated a lot on a daily basis, local runs, large runs, and switchers have to go across this crossing before they can backup into the yard. This crossing gets blocked by trains frequently holding up traffic anywhere between 10 minutes to 3 hours. the problem with Dauphin St on the side i'm on, is the road itself dead ends 20 ft behind me, and the only thing here is the convention center parking garage. So if a train is blocking the crossing, all vehicles coming out of the parking garage are stranded until the train clears the crossing. Oopsie. HA!

Street Running: Alco/Geep exchange

Norfolk Southern GP 40s trade trains with two Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Alco Century diesels in Painted Post, NY. GP 40s head out to the NS mainline, then back the train into the yards at Erwin, NY. Alcos take their train from the Erwin Yards, down Chemung Street and head back towards Bath, Cohocton etc. You can hear the brakes squeel and complain from both trains as the Norfolk Southern slows to a stop and the Alcos descend the grade heading towards the Dresser Rand Factory.

One Geep Wounder

A single GP35 switches an entire 114 car coal train all by it's lonesome in Missoula Montana. It first switched the train from a yard track to the main, then pulled it down the Darby branch so that it could wye the entire train. Quite the sight to see/hear! The unit has a failing S3K, with a dead 48 bell and a badly lagging 37 bell, so much so that at times it sounds like an S31.

Geeps At Work

I had a lot of odds and ends of Geep footage laying around that I couldn't use in other videos, so I decided to patch together a Geepfest. It's not my best work, which is why I couldn't use it elsewhere. But for Geep fans, there's some eye and ear candy. The Grand Junction yard isn't as busy as it used to be during Rio Grande days, and most of the power here is various flavors of GE AC44s, but there are a few Geeps kept around for locals, switching, and to support MOW crews.
