Commercial on the Vietnam War: George Wallace 1968 Presidential Campaign Election Ad

thefilmarchive.org Former Governor of Alabama George Wallace ran in the 1968 United States presidential election as the candidate of the American Independent Party. Wallace's pro-segregation policies had been rejected by the mainstream of the Democratic Party. The impact of the Wallace campaign was substantial, winning the electoral votes of several states in the Deep South. Although Wallace did not expect to win the election, his strategy was to prevent either major party candidate from winning a preliminary majority in the Electoral College, which would then give him bargaining power to determine the winner. When George Wallace ran for President in 1968, it was not as a Democrat -- which he had done in the 1964 Democratic primaries and would again in the 1972 Democratic primaries -- but as a candidate of the American Independent Party. The American Independent Party was formed by Wallace, whose pro-segregation policies had been rejected by the mainstream of the Democratic Party. Wallace's strategy was essentially the same as that of Dixiecrat candidate Strom Thurmond in 1948 in that the campaign was run without any realistic chance of winning the election outright, but instead with the hope of receiving enough electoral votes to force the House of Representatives to decide the election, something many observers thought might happen. This would presumably give him the role of a power broker; Wallace hoped that southern states could use their clout to end federal efforts ...

Which, according to its organizers, "...on the 23 of September 2007, an artistic installation will celebrate in Paris, France, the 50th year of publication of On the Road, the mythical book by Jack Kerouac. During the afternoon and all night long, we will organize an artistic installation including films, music, photography, films, lectures, text and..." They invited all to "make a video on the road, where you're, everywhere in the world, upload it on youtube (or any other site) and send us the address of your video. SWEET HOME ALABAMA: GEORGE WALLACE

George Wallace was shot by Arthur Bremer while campaigning for the presidency in Laurel, Maryland, on May 15, 1972 at a time when he was receiving high ratings in the opinion polls. Bremer got close to the candidate, then pulled a .38-caliber revolver out of his pocket and emptied it. Three other people; two male security officers and a female spectator, were hit as well.

Terry Sanford - Second Emancipation Speech, January, 1963

In January,1963--on the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation--North Carolina governor Terry Sanford called for a second emancipation that would free the state's citizens--black and white alike--from the twin scourges of poverty and Jim Crow. Sanford's determination to uproot what one contemporary called the "poverty-segregation complex" became the defining principle of the North Carolina Fund, an antipoverty agency that the governor established in the summer of 1963. Over the next five years, the Fund served as a laboratory for the national War on Poverty. For more on the Fund, see Robert R. Korstad and James L. Leloudis, To Right These Wrongs: The North Carolina Fund and the Battle to End Poverty and Inequality in 1960s America (University of North Carolina Press, 2010). www.torightthesewrongs.com (Source Videotape #1a in the Terry Sanford Papers #3531, Southern Historical Collection, Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. DOC: FUNNY BY GEORGE - The George Wallace Story (excerpt 02) (1999)

Excerpt from "Funny By George: The George Wallace Story" (3'30" from 56') George Wallace - larrikin, comedian - an original. Using rare photographs, home movies, feature film footage and contemporary interviews, Funny by George - The George Wallace Story, traces his colourful life. This one-hour documentary looks at George's influence; redresses his place in history and proudly presents a sample of his work for the audiences of today. Professionally, George found success on stage, in motion pictures and on radio. From his early beginnings in country travelling shows and vaudeville, he became Australia's first genuine box office comedian of the sound era, starring in five feature films. When his first feature, "His Royal Highness", was released in England he was hailed as one of the biggest comic finds in a decade. But his deeply ingrained Australian manner was to bring about the biggest disappointment of his life when he finally made his stage assault on England. Privately, George Wallace was a complex man whose life was a battle for recognition and acceptance. From a miserable childhood in Sydney, he escaped to the outback of Queensland to find work as a cane-cutter at the age of thirteen. His one marriage, which produced a son, was a short-lived failure. Domesticity took second place to the stage. Plagued by ill health in his later years, George was described by some as jealous, uncouth and a slob...and by others as kind, talented and hysterically funny. George Wallace ...
