What's different about Chrome OS and Chromebooks, other than the entire user-experience taking place exclusively in a Web browser (Google Chrome), is everything takes place in the cloud. Email, document writing, calendaring, social networking - everything. From a security perspective this means that all website and Web browser attack techniques, such as like Cross-Site Scripting, Cross-Site Request, and Clickjacking, have the potential of circumventing Chrome OS's security protections and exposing all the users data. Two members of the WhiteHat Security's Threat Research Center, Matt Johansen and Kyle Osborn, have spent months hacking away on Google's Cr-48 prototype laptops. Today we unbox, test, and review the Google Chrome OS running on unbranded reference hardware known as the cr-48. Takeaways: fast, fast, fast... but slow in some places (web cam, watching videos, certain web pages). Battery exceeds expectations. Rugged (took a 3-ft fall on hardwood floor and barely got a scratch). CAPS LOCK key replaced by a New Tab key is the best innovation to come to the keyboard in, well, EVER. A great first start. Ice Cream Sandwich only has a single percent of market share, but Google releasing its successor. Latest rumors saing that Android's next release - 5.0 Jelly Bean - will be unveiled in the second quarter of this year. According to the often reliable DigiTimes, who quote Taiwan-based supply chain makers, Android 5.0 Jelly Bean will bring further optimizations for larger screen devices - tablets and netbook computers. One of the key features of the upcoming Android release will be its ability to dual-boot Chrome OS. The cloud-based platform still struggles to make an impact and Google is obviously planning on using the wildly popular Android to change that. Dual-booting will also make Android 5.0 Jelly Bean much easier to market with computer makers. Given the advance for the Asus Transformer Prime, we guess there might be a niche for ultra-portable computers with super long battery life and good performance, even if they don't run a regular desktop OS. We'll have to wait and see about that. For now we are circling June 27 on our calendars - it's the day when the Google I/O developer event begins and if an Android 5.0 Jelly Bean announcement is to happen in Q2 - that will certainly be the place.

Chrome OS isn't the only operating system with its head in the clouds. Jolicloud's Joli OS has been around for a few years now, and it has a similar focus on web apps. It doesn't boot as fast or feature the same tight hardware integration that Chrome OS does, but it can run native desktop apps as well as web apps.
