They're frustrated with new regulations that include drastic bonus cuts and layoffs. Sharp decrease in exports and a gloomy world economy are drastically affecting the shoe factory business. More than 6000 shoe factory workers in China's Guangdong Province took to the streets last Thursday. The workers from Yucheng Shoe Factory in Dongguan City were protesting against new management policies. These include huge bonus cuts, restrictions placed on the number of toilet visits, and the dismissal of 18 middle management staff due to a drastic decrease in orders. The strike continued for two hours. Dozens of protesters sustained head injuries after being beaten by riot police. Workers resumed their work after negotiating with the company. A gloomy world economy coupled with higher wages and a progressively competitive business environment has caused the company to incur heavy losses—and to impose the new regulations. But workers are feeling the pinch in their wallets. Their basic monthly pay is about 170 dollars. With extra work, they can earn up to 300 dollars a month. The death could spark further unrest in Guangdong Province and Chinese authorities have dispatched police to stop any possible protests. A man accused of participating in protests in southern China, Xue Jinbo, has died in custody. Xue allegedly was in the riot on September 21st, when residents in Wukang village smashed up a police station and other government buildings. They were protesting forced land seizures by local authorities. According to a statement by the Shanwei City government in Guangdong Province, Xue was rushed to the hospital after feeling ill on the third day of detention. He later died of what they say was cardiac failure. Villagers say Xue's appearance after he died was too horrible to look at, suggesting he had been beaten in custody. [Mr. Cai, Wukan Villager]: "His face was deformed and his body was scarred all over. Right now the government will not allow the corpse to be taken back to the village. I found the people of Shenzhen welcoming and I enjoyed my visit. The purpose of my visit was for work. The result of my trip is that I now have a few more friends :)

Residents in Shanwei are angry that local media under-reported the number of people who took to the streets. They have vowed to keep putting pressure on authorities. Content: On Monday, November 21st, around 5000 people marched from Wukang Village in Shanwei, Guangdong Province. Arriving at government offices in Lufeng City, they demanded the return of farmland seized by local authorities for development. But Chinese media reports on Monday played down the number of protestors. On Tuesday, locals angry at the reports marched again. [Xue Xiansheng, Wukang Resident]: "I saw a report by a local TV station in Lufeng. It said we had 400 people protesting, but we had at least no less than 4000. Some people estimated 6000, figures of 4000 to 6000. They reported that we only had 400 people. Everyone in the village was angry." The conflict first heated up in September when hundreds of residents ransacked local government offices in Lufeng and bulldozed a wall around the disputed land. It's estimated that there will be 10000 villagers joining the petition. They will ask the local government to return the body of the dead villagers' representative, Xue Jinbo, and to release the other 4 villagers, and also will ask central government to be involved in the investigation. Now, Wukan villagers have formed an anti-violence movement, the protest is sweeping the east part of Guangdong Province. Including Longtou Village, Lufeng County, many villages have started or are prepared to protect their rights. The worker had been trying to demand his unpaid wages. The protests happened after workers repeatedly asked authorities to arrest the men responsible for the attack, without result. Tensions remained in Chaozhou City in southern Guangdong Province on Wednesday after a violent demonstration Monday night. At least hundreds of migrant workers clashed with police. They were protesting the attack on a fellow worker, Xiong Hanjiang. 19-year-old Xiong's arms and legs were severely injured on June 1st. His parents had accompanied him to demand unpaid wages from his employer, who then ordered men to attack them. [Xiong Hanjiang, Injured Worker]: "My tendons have been severed. My bones were also slashed. The bones on my right foot and left hand were broken. My right arm has inches-long lacerations." Xiong is originally from Sichuan province.
