Gulzaar saab, as he is affectionately known, primarily works in Hindi-Urdu. He also works in Punjabi, several dialects of Hindi like braj bhasha, khadi boli, Haryanvi and Marwari. Gulzar was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2004 for his contribution to the arts, and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002. He has also won a number of National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards in various categories. In 2009, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Jai Ho" in the film Slumdog Millionaire (2008). "Aandhi" is a 1975 Indian movie supposedly based on then prime minister Indira Gandhi's life, but in reality, It was inspired by Tarkeshwari Sinha, apart from Indira Gandhi. It was directed by Gulzar. The movie is noted for its songs composed by Rahul Dev Burman, written by Gulzar and sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The movie was not allowed a full release as the similarity to Mrs Gandhi's life held it up while she was in power. After her loss in the 1977 elections the ruling Janata party cleared it and had it premiered on national television. Sampooran Singh Kalra (born 18 August 1936), known popularly by his pen name Gulzar is an Indian poet, lyricist, producer, screen writer and director. Gulzar Ji has described the agony and pathos of tormented relations so beautifully in his lyrics. A different version of this ghazal sung by Jagjit ji, has been used in the movie Pinjar also. In my video rendition, I have tried to depict the soreness of the anguished relations. A loving couple, husband and wife, gets separated due to some misunderstandings. The husband realizes his mistakes and follows her to the Airport. He requests her to forgive and come back to him. Jagjit ji's style and melody was a departure from the prevalent genre of music known as 'Ghazal' which was heavily based on classical and semi-classical Indian music. Jagjit Singh contributed immensely towards changing the course of ghazal singing by making it more ear-friendly, melodic and enjoyable to a wider audience. Compared to his earlier ghazals (sung during 70s and 80s) his later ghazals have acquired a more soulful and poignant demeanour.
