Sipho Gumede Isomiso(Drought)

filmed, edited and directed by Dick Jewell in 1995. from his second album for MELT2000 called Ubuntu. Drought is an enemy of mankind. In olden days, African people prayed to Unomkhubulwane, the rain goddess, for rain. When rivers stop flowing, tears start flowing. The soul is separated from the body. We all get affected since we are part of the universe. Let us pray for rain - rain is life. OUTERNATIONAL MELTDOWN SIPHO GUMEDE & FRIENDS

The late Sipho Gumede at the height of his creative work. Amateur film footage by Philip Foglar taken during the Outernational Meltdown live concert at the Baxter theatre in Cape Town, South Africa. The concert concluded a series of recordings in both Johannesburg and Cape Town and was dubbed by Dizu Plaatjies the "WE MUST MIX" live gathering - a very appropriate title if one considers that 1994 was the year of democratic change in South Africa. the producers and performers of the OUTERNATIONAL MELTDOWN series were Airto Moreira, Pops Mohamed, Jose Neto, Sipho Gumede, Andew Missingham and Byron Wallen. Guests performing on this video are Dave Mxolise Mayekana, Andrew Missingham, and the late Moses Taiwa Molelekwa who later went on to form Acid Jazz band BARUNGWA.

Sipho Gumede "Down South"

Sipho Gumede, a man of extraordinary musical talent, was born in Cato Manor, Durban. His earliest musical memory is of playing guitar and pennywhistle. The guitar was homemade: a 5 gallon tin, wood and fish gut. He and his friends would play the tunes of Spokes Mashiyane, Zakes Nkosi and Lemmy "Special" Mabaso. At the age of 12, Sipho went to stay on a farm some 30kms from Umlazi. He was exposed to many different kinds of music - vocal and soulful traditions, the music of weddings and funerals. After school each day, he'd pass the time watching cattle practicing on a borrowed guitar. This period was crucial in the formation of Sipho's musical outlook. Just before his death from cancer in 2004, he returned to his beloved Kwa Zulu Natal to play his guitar against a backdrop of some of the provinces most stunning landscapes, which take in two World Heritage sites. Our first step of action in executing our task was that of researching some famous paintings from the late great Impressionist painter,' Vincent Van Gogh'. We were captured by the beauty and oddness of one of his most famous paintings to date, painted in 1889 known as 'Starry Night'. The wild brush strokes almost immediately sparked up our fuse on what type of music we wanted. The instruments had to be played with lengthy notes, as if they were being dragged out swiftly and melodically. We merged two of our favorite colors (black and grey) to get the color we felt gelled well together with the painting and the music. The essence of creepiness was almost complete. Our final task was to find a picture of an architectural design that would best sum everything up. The wavy stair case did just that. It corresponded with all three items. Its wavy and menacing structure compliments the music, painting and the color very well.
