Gunsmithing the 1911: Trigger Job by "Terry G", Pt 1

PART 1 OF 2 ////////////// Take a high value 1911 like the Taurus PT1911 and make it better for less than you think too. Here TacticalDoodle and I take the long drive down to Impact Guns in Ogden, UT to upgrade some aspects of the TNP PT1911 Project Gun. We enlist the services of experienced Impact Guns Gunsmith Terry Gardner to install the "Wilson Combat Value" parts into the gun (safety, sear, hammer, and modding the stock grip safety for interface). Previously installed by me, we didn't accomplish the proper fitting needed to achieve professional results. In this Nutnfancy two-parter, you will see Terry in detailed action as he modifies, fits, and explains his techniques for achieving an improved trigger pull on this PT1911. You can probably achieve the same results yourself after some trial and error, some botched parts, lots of time, and specially purchased jigs and Arkansas stones. We show all aspects in great detail should you choose to do. But having a professional like Terry G, with many such jobs under his belt, is the way to go to save time and money and keep things safe. The results were impressive: crisp safety actuation and a clean 4.25 lb trigger pull with improved take up. Terry G states the cost for a trigger job is $65 and accepts your shipments at the Impact Guns Ogden store (ensure UNLOADED), even your botched project guns that your "cousin" screwed up. Gunsmith - Crowning the muzzle of a rifle barrel

This GunTec video provides the information necessary for anyone to recrown the muzzle of their rifle using simple hand tools. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, repairs and crowns the muzzle of a Winchester model 60 to demonstrate the process. Start by removing all of the damaged material from the muzzle with a smooth, chalked file. Tool marks are eliminated by polishing with varying grits of sandpaper, using the file as a backer. Once the surface is square and smooth, the crown is cut using a round headed, brass wood screw and a bit of lapping compound. Simply apply the compound to the head of the screw, chuck the screw in a hand drill, and touch the head of the screw to the muzzle while turning it at a medium speed.

Gunsmith - Free float the gun barrel on a rifle

This video provides step by step instructions for free floating the barrel on a bolt action rifle. Hosted by Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, this GunTec production makes it easy for anyone to perform this simple task. Free floating refers to the process of relieving material from the barrel channel so there is not any contact between the stock and the barrel of the rifle. This prevents the point of impact from changing due to fluctuations in relative humidity. The identification and removal of the necessary material is performed using inletting black, masking tape, and a barrel bedding tool like the ones produced by Gunline. A simple test to ensure that your barrel is free floated is to slide a dollar bill between the barrel and the stock. If the bill slides freely back and forth, then the barrel is properly free floated.

Getting Started In Gunsmithing with Bob Dunlap Webcast Replay

americangunsmithinginstitute.org In this replay of a live webcast, Gene Kelly and Bob Dunlap discuss how easy it is to get started in gunsmithing. 1 hour 16 minutes long. Forover 15 years the American Gunsmithing Institute (AGI) has been training and people just like you to become certified gunsmiths at a fraction of the cost of a campus based program. We designed the AGI Professional Gunsmithing Course on video to give you the advantages of a campus based program with none of the disadvantages. In fact, many of our students say that our video based course is better because they can replay the instructor any time a difficult project comes in. In fact, researchers say that we retain less than 12% of what we learn in a classroom. That's why we've designed our course to be sure every step is demonstrated and available for your review when needed. The course contains over 100 hours of detailed video training by Master Gunsmith, Robert Dunlap and is Divided into four sections, Pistols & Revolvers, Shotguns, Rifles, and 22's. It even contains Complete Testing and Certification. To learn more contact go to: www.americangunsmithinginstitute.org or give us a call at: 1-800-797-0867

Gunsmith - Lapping riflescope rings to improve holding power

While today's scope rings are of the best quality they have ever been, many can still be improved using a simple process called lapping. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, explains this process using the Wheeler Engineering Scope Lapping Kit. This kit includes a steel bar that when coated with 220 grit lapping compound is worked back and forth inside the assembled rings. This smoothes out any high spots and increases the surface contact between the rings and the scope body. This prevents damage to the scope body, which more rigidly holding the scope to prevent any shifts in point of impact that can result from continuous use.

Gunsmith - How to repair slow timed Smith & Wesson revolver

A slow timed revolver is one that fails to bring the chamber completely into alignment as the gun comes to battery. In this GunTec presentation Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, details how to fix the timing on a slow timed revolver. Typically, slow timing is caused by the hand not fully engaging the teeth of the ratchet on the rear of the cylinder. This problem is corrected by the installation of an oversized hand. Simply disassemble the revolver, install the new hand, and check the functioning of the action. If the action binds, it usually means the hand was too large. To properly fit the hand, remove it from the revolver and use a fine India stone to bevel its head. Not reinstall and check the timing. Repeat this process, checking your work frequently, until the fun functions properly.

How to shorten and recrown barrel with hand tool

Although most people are intimidated when it comes to shortening and recrowning a barrel, it's pretty easy when you have the right tools. In this GunTec presentation Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, demonstrates how to cut and recrown a rifle barrel using an old Winchester model 67. He starts by clamping a Wheeler Engineering dovetail cutting fixture on the barrel at the point where it is to be shortened. A hacksaw is used to cut off the portion of the barrel to be removed and a smooth file is used to true up the surface. The hardened fixture will insure the muzzle is filed down square to the bore. For cutting the crown Larry uses an eleven degree piloted reamer. Chatter marks are removed using abrasive paper backed by his thumb.

Polishing the bolt on a bolt action rifle can really dress up the appearance of the firearm. In this GunTec video the Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA, Larry Potterfield, polishes the bolt on a Remington 514 to demonstrate the process. He starts by using some abrasive paper backed with a needle file to polish the flat areas. Once they have been brightened up, he polishes the bolt body lengthwise using an art eraser as a backer. Switching to the next highest grit he cross polishes using a shoeshine motion. This process is continued, switching back and forth between cross polishing and lengthwise polishing, using abrasives of progressively higher grit. The final polish is done using Simichrome polish. The result is a beautifully polished bolt.

Gunsmith Cats AMV

An AMV that's been on the backburner for quite a while. Originally the first 3/4s of this were matched up with Heart's if Looks Could Kill. Unfortunately it was much to short and I didn't really want to loop the song twice or add in another so it got scrapped until i decided on something else. AC/DC and guns are a good fit but finding one with a 5 minute plus running time was impossible so I again had to scrap most of the familiar songs and go with something a little lesser known. All in all I think the songs a good fit. Any of the lyrical match up however is purely coincidental. The AMV is pretty much everything that happens between Rally and Radinov in acts 2 and 3 of Bulletproof in the space of just over seven minutes. Random videos just bother me for some reason or other. Trimmed a bit for length. Contains bloody animated violence and as my parent's would say demonic hard rock.

Gunsmith - Fix excessive cylinder endshake in S&W revolver

When the cylinder of a revolvers has a lot of front to back play or movement, it's called endshake. It's a problem that is easily corrected if you have the right parts. In this GunTec video Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, demonstrates the process for correcting gross cylinder. After measuring for the exact amount of endshake using a feeler gage, he begins by removing the yoke retaining screw, the yoke, and the cylinder. Using a padded vise and some snap caps to protect the extractor, he disassembles the cylinder assembly. A Power Custom cylinder endshake bushing is used to take up the slack in the cylinder to yoke fit. These bushings measure only two thousandths of an inch thick. Once the bushing is lubricated it is dropped into the cylinder and the gun is reassembled and checked for proper fit.

Smoothing the single action trigger pull on a S&W revolver can be a safe and easy job if you have the right tools. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, explains the process for smoothing the single action trigger pull on a Smith and Wesson revolver using a Power Custom Sear Stoning Fixture. He begins by disassembling the revolver and removing the trigger. Once the trigger is clamped to the fixture and the unit is adjusted for the proper angle, a fine India stone is used to true of the sear surfaces. A bit of layout dye is applied to the sear during this process so that progress can be monitored. Once the surface has been polished, the trigger is lubricated and placed back into the revolver. The final step is to check the trigger pull with a pull gage.

How to remove a dent from shotgun barrels

Dents in shotgun barrels are fairly common but are easy to remove if you have the right tools. This GunTec video covers the process of raising dents in a shotgun barrel from start to finish. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, guides you through the process using a Baker dent raising tool and a light hammer. The dent is primarily raised by inserting the tool into the bore and lining up the anvil under the dent. Turning the handle on the tool will raise the anvil which pushes out the dent. The final creases are removed by tapping around the dent with a light, brass hammer. If necessary, the barrel is now ready for refinishing.

Gunsmith - Safety features of the Smith & Wesson revolver

This GunTec presentation explains the three built in safety features of a Smith and Wesson revolver. Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, details the safety features starting the rebound seat. This protrusion on the rebound slide engages the hammer and prevents the firing pin from protruding through the frame when the trigger is at rest. The second safety feature is the hammer block. This piece prevents the hammer from falling while the trigger is at rest, but cams out of the way as the trigger is pulled. This last safety feature is the hammer stop. Located behind the hammer, the hammer stop prevents the cylinder from being opened while the revolver is cocked, and prevents the revolver from being cocked while the cylinder is open. This is designed to prevent loading a cocked revolver and accidently discharging it when closing the cylinder.
