In-Band On Channel (IBOC) Measurements for Proofing HD Radio Signals
Broadcasters around the world continue to adopt the IBOC method of transmitting digital radio and analog radio broadcast signals on the same channel. However AM IBOC in the United States still faces some serious technological challenges, including nighttime interference with other stations. Broadcast engineers need professional tools to confirm the performance of IBOC transmitters for both AM and FM in accordance with the National Radio Systems Committee measurement recommendation, NRSC-G201. Canadian AM Stereo vs. HD Radio
Here we have one of the lame promos for HD Radio, demonstrating how its wimpy, pseudo-stereo, artifact-ridden digitally compressed audio is supposedly an upgrade from conventional narrowband analog mono AM. AM Stereo then puts the HD Radio to shame with clearly superior sound, even from a 12-year-old cassette tape recording of 960 CHNS, which was an AM Stereo Oldies station in Halifax, NS, Canada (now sadly moved to FM and no longer on AM, like a lot of stations in Canada). HD Radio is pretty much a total failure at this point, but it's still not too late to bring back high quality stereo sound to the AM radio band with AM Stereo. Most HD Radio tuners already receive analog AM Stereo, too, so those people who bought into the HD Radio hype have not totally wasted their investment. Many thanks to Alex K. from Halifax, who originally recorded this AM Stereo aircheck of CHNS back in March 1997, and sent me a copy of it on Type I Dolby C NR cassette tape!

Lightning 'taking out' an AM IBOC/HD Radio Signal, KMKI 620 kHz
A live demonstration of how lightning affeects an AM HD Radio signal with a relatively weak thunderstorm in progress judging by the infrequent lightning. Propagation at the low end of the AM Band, at 620 kHz, is quite favorable for RF energy originating from either an AM station or Mother Nature's Lightning; Lightning also contains a fair amount energy in the frequency range that is the _low_ end of the AM Broadcast Band, making static discharge from lightning storms particularly disruptive to AM IBOC HD Radio stations. Some of you long time fans of mine out there may be wondering why you're seeing this again, main reason is the original video was uploaded when YouTube's encoders weren't too hot and by today's standards if you take a look at it, it looks ropey as all Hell, it's barely watchable the quality is so low. Here it is: www.youtube.com What's worse was that grainy copy I assumed for years was the only copy in existence, as I lost the original master copy due to a corrupted hard drive, but by total luck today I found the original file edits on a DVD-ROM whilst clearing out my room and so painstakingly re-edited the video into a nice new 720p HD version. I also went the extra mile and added an extended recap of what's happened with the Jet Set Radio franchise since making the original retro corner in 2007 adding info on the Wii version as well as the GBA port which I originally omitted at the time due to time constraints. But I hope you'll enjoy it, I'm just happy I've got a decent copy of it once again! :D

Pride Radio on 103.5-HD2 in NYC
Pride Radio is one of several HD Radio formats on the air in New York City. It is on the HD2 channel of 103.5 WKTU. Overall the music on Pride is very similar to that of WKTU's regular format, so while I appreciate the concept, I think they should be playing a wider variety of music, rather than just dance music. Pride Radio is on HD Radio channels in various cities in the USA; New York City is the latest addition. I am receiving it on my new $49.99 Insignia (Best Buy house brand) HD Radio "walkman". HD Radio, aka IBOC DAB, is a method for regular AM and FM broadcast radio stations to transmit digital signals. Unfortunately the reception and sound quality continue to be poor, despite improvements since its introduction in 2002. The "HD" in HD Radio does *not* stand for High Definition -- at best, the quality is almost as good as a regular analog FM signal with clean reception, and at worst it's no better than a low-bitrate audio web stream over the Internet. Also, HD reception is very poor unless you're within close range of the transmitter. For this video I had to park my car in a spot with ideal NYC reception. At home, HD reception is spotty at best, and while driving, it is basically useless -- the digital reception keeps cutting out and switching back to analog. This radio does not include the AM band (not even analog), but HD Radio on AM is even worse, and causes large amounts of interference to analog reception.

This is a demonstration of my Sony HD Radio I had bought last year form my bedroom. I basically go through the stations I can receive as well as the sound quality and overall reliability of this new radio receiver I had bought for my bedroom.
